Wigan Warriors fought off a Warrington Wolves fightback to move within two points of Super League leaders Leeds Rhinos, thanks to their young stand-ins who stepped up when injuries hit. The home side had to do without star full-back Jai Field, who reported a back problem on the morning of the match, and they found themselves trailing early as Warrington, led by Sam Burgess’s side, struck twice to take a 12-0 lead. Albert Hopoate crossed for Warrington, while 18-year-old Warrington prodigy Ewan Irwin also crossed, sending a message that the visitors were there to spoil Wigan’s day.
The game swung back and forth, with Wigan remaining level as the clock ticked toward the final 30 minutes. Then the young Wigan forwards stepped up. Cartwright, Kerr, McDermott and Austin Daniel, who had each answered their head coach Matt Peet’s call to contribute, delivered their first senior tries to swing the momentum in Wigan’s favour and show the quality emerging from the club’s academy. Cartwright revealed after the match that he only learned he would be in the side on the morning of the game when Field’s injury opened a door for him. The 20-year-old winger made an immediate impact, finishing sharply after Hopoate’s early break and a superb effort from Irwin had unsettled the home crowd.
Wigan started the season eager to build on a strong run in all competitions, having won eight of nine fixtures in all competitions since their earlier league defeat to Warrington at the Halliwell Jones Stadium in April. But Warrington looked determined to lay to rest the memory of their Magic Weekend loss to Leigh Leopards, and the early double from Hopoate and Irwin had left them in a commanding position.
Cartwright’s try came as James Bentley landed in the sin-bin for repeated infringements, a moment when Wigan pressed and pushed for a breakthrough. The visitors managed to cling to their lead until midway through the second period when 19-year-old loose forward Kerr showcased impressive footwork to dart over for an equalising try just after the break. The pendulum swung again when Kaide Ellis’s high shot on Irwin allowed the youngster to calmly convert a penalty and edge Warrington back in front, taking his personal tally to 10 points for the night.
The seesaw continued as Eckersley’s third-quarter try—his 16th of the season—came from a clever finish after a well-timed pass from Harry Smith opened up the defence, putting Wigan back in front. Warrington hit back with Matty Ashton seizing space on the back of Leon Hayes’s pass to score his 99th try for the club, tying the scores at 18-18 and underscoring the closeness of the contest.
The decisive moment arrived when McDermott forced his way over from a cleverly executed touchback by Daniel off a Keighran kick, giving Wigan a slender advantage. A video decision had previously denied Irwin a second try after a knock-on, but Wigan sealed the win near the end with Daniel’s late finish in the corner, supported by Keighran’s conversion to complete the scoring spree.
With five minutes remaining, Wigan confirmed the result by finishing a rapid attack as Daniel dashed in for the final try, and Keighran added the touchline goal as Wigan ran out 30-18 winners. That scoreline highlighted the significance of the next generation stepping up when needed, as Cartwright, Kerr, McDermott, and Daniel earned their first senior tries and contributed to a hard-fought victory that keeps Wigan in pursuit of top-of-the-table Leeds.
In summary, Wigan’s young forwards delivered when it mattered most, turning potential adversity into triumph. The performance underlined the depth available at the club and provided a timely boost ahead of a run of important league fixtures as the season progresses. Keighran’s kicking for goals—five conversions—helped cap a productive afternoon, while Hopoate and Irwin had made early impacts for Warrington, reminding fans of the quality in both sides. The result left Wigan two points adrift of the leaders, with momentum now firmly in their favor as they look to push up the Super League table.
