Rangers Crown King for 2 HR, 4 Runs in 8th to Slay Astros 7-3

Coming into Friday night, the Astros needed just two wins to clinch their 10th consecutive Silver Boot Series title over the Rangers. They still needed two wins. The score on this night settled at Rangers 7, Astros 3. In the 8th inning, Wyatt Langford delivered the moment of the game, albeit late, when he launched the second pitch from reliever Bryan King into the left-field seats to break a 3-3 deadlock. Jake Burger followed with his 16th homer of the season, and King’s night collapsed as he surrendered four runs in a dismal outing.
Beyond King’s rough patch, the focus remained squarely on Hunter Brown. The evidence continued to mount that Brown isn’t himself. From a 23-pitch first inning to a string of leadoff walks, the once-dominant ace who finished third in last year’s Cy Young voting is faltering with his mechanics and his attack in the zone. At one point in the fourth, Brown scrapped the windup altogether, delivering from the stretch to multiple batters, marking Brown’s fifth start since returning from a shoulder strain and prompting the question of whether the mound dominance that carried him to national prominence will return at full tilt this season. Brown finished with 6 innings pitched, allowing 4 hits, 3 earned runs, 5 walks, and 4 strikeouts, tying a career high with the five free passes.
The Rangers got on the board first, pushing across a pair of runs in the opening frame. Brandon Nimmo laced a double that scored Langford, with Josh Jung crossing home plate shortly after to put Texas ahead. Joc Pederson then disrupted Houston’s plans with a solo homer off Brown in the bottom of the fifth, his fourth homer of the season against Astros pitching, widening the lead to 3–0.
Houston finally cracked the scoreboard in the sixth when Yordan Alvarez launched his 200th career homer to center field, a majestic 455-foot blast that trimmed the deficit to 3–1. The Astros kept the pressure on in the seventh, as Yainer Diaz, continuing his impressive season, delivered a run-scoring hit to bring home LaMonte Wade Jr. with his sixth home run of the year, tying the game at 3–3.
That tie persisted into the eighth, when the Rangers seized control once more, tallying four runs to pull ahead and ultimately seal the win. Houston’s loss marked their 50th defeat of the season and extended the current road trip struggles to 3 losses in four games.
Other notes from the night include Jeremy Peña’s return from the IL, where he led off the game and reached safely in his first at-bat back. Alvarez continued his assault on Rangers pitching, hitting a home run on Friday night that traveled the longest distance of any of his long balls this year. He now has seven homers against Texas this season.
Looking ahead, Peter Lambert is set to take the mound on Saturday night with a 7-5 record, opposite Kumar Rocker, who will be looking for just his third win of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 CDT, as the Astros seek to regroup and even the series, while Texas aims to finish the set with a flourish. This latest result leaves Houston needing to regroup quickly as they press toward reclaiming momentum in a pivotal division rivalry.
