‘It Would Be the Fit’ — Timberwolves HC Chris Finch Sends Recruiting Pitch to LeBron James Amid Free Agency

By admin — In News — July 11, 2026

Among all the teams still in the LeBron James free-agent sweepstakes, the Minnesota Timberwolves may have seemed like one of the most unlikely destinations at the start of the summer. Yet they could end up delivering the best overall basketball fit for a Hall of Famer who is clearly chasing his fifth NBA title. Several analysts have weighed in, with some declaring Minnesota the ideal landing spot for the four-time MVP.
We already know the Timberwolves have privately pitched James. So what would head coach Chris Finch highlight in his sales pitch? Now we have an answer. With the Timberwolves’ Summer League squad in action in Las Vegas, Finch paused during a live stream to address a broad range of topics, including the question that Timberwolves fans have been eager to hear.
When it came to how Finch would recruit James to Minnesota, his message was straightforward. “It would be the fit, for sure,” Finch said. “We have a hole at the four that he would easily fill. The players around him have a history of winning, and they are guys who could benefit from his leadership as well. His knowledge, his insights, his championship experience. I think it would be a fun group to play with. I know he’s searching for happiness right now. I believe the happiness quotient in Minnesota is exceptionally high.”
Even with president of basketball operations Tim Connelly trading Naz Reid—one of Anthony Edwards’ closest basketball friends—the happiness quotient in Minnesota appears robust. Winning tends to have that effect, and after two Western Conference Finals appearances in the past three seasons, the Timberwolves have shown they’re tantalizingly close to achieving their goals.
There are plenty of ties that could pull James toward the Twin Cities. Notably, James has already been coached by Finch before, during Finch’s stint as head coach of the 2024 All-Star Game. Edwards and James already share a Gold Medal from the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. And James could fit into Minnesota without being asked to shoulder the load as the primary scorer, primary playmaker, or primary defender. At 41, he could focus on maximizing his own game while passing down two-plus decades worth of wisdom to a roster that has already accomplished a great deal without him.
Plus, as one of the ten NBA franchises that have never won a Finals trophy, a final run with the Timberwolves could become a lasting legacy moment for James in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. It’s not just a chapter added to his career; it could be the capstone that elevates his legend. If Minnesota lures him, it would symbolize more than a new team; it would represent a potential turning point for a franchise hungry for its first championship and for a player seeking one last, unforgettable chapter.
For Wolves fans, the appeal is clear: a veteran leader with championship wisdom, a proven winner who can complement a young core on the rise, and a chance to secure a lasting legacy in Minnesota. Finch’s message boils down to one simple idea—the fit matters most. If James buys into that fit, the Timberwolves could be looking at more than a potential free-agent signing; they could be witnessing the start of a transformative era.
