Barcelona changed Joan Gamper Trophy plans after Alvaro Arbeloa’s appointment at Fulham – report

Barcelona’s pursuit of an opponent for this year’s Joan Gamper Trophy took an unexpected turn after the club decided not to invite Fulham following the appointment of former Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa. According to Mundo Deportivo, the Catalan club had been weighing a number of options for the traditional pre-season fixture, with Fulham emerging as one of the leading candidates in the early discussions.
A meeting with an English club had seemed an attractive option for Barcelona, given the high level of competition in the Premier League and the chance to pit Hansi Flick’s squad against quality opposition in the build-up to the new season. However, Fulham’s managerial change prompted a reassessment of plans, ultimately paving the way for Egyptian giants Al Ahly to be selected as this year’s Gamper Trophy opponents.
Barcelona aimed to organise a match that would generate excitement among fans while also serving as meaningful preparation before the competitive campaign kicks off. The decision to cancel Fulham’s involvement was linked to Arbeloa’s appointment, which shifted the optics of facing the newly appointed manager.
Although Fulham appeared to fit many of the club’s requirements—offering strong opposition and the appeal of taking on a Premier League side—the situation changed once Arbeloa took charge. The former Real Madrid defender has never won favour with many Barcelona supporters, a sentiment that stretches back to his playing days. More recently, his tenure within Madrid’s coaching circle and various public remarks have reinforced this perception, making the prospect of him leading the opposition far less appealing to Barcelona.
Thus, Barcelona announced that their Gamper Trophy opponent would be Al Ahly. The Egyptian powerhouse is one of Africa’s most successful clubs, widely respected on the international stage, and its inclusion promises a high-profile and competitive fixture for the club’s pre-season calendar.
Fulham weren’t the only clubs considered during Barcelona’s planning process. The sporting department also explored inviting Ajax and Mexican side Cruz Azul, both of which were regarded as credible alternatives for the annual showcase. Yet negotiations with these clubs did not produce agreements that satisfied all parties, as logistical and organisational challenges prevented a move forward with either option.
With those avenues closed, Barcelona formalised a deal with Al Ahly, an institution renowned for its domestic dominance and its notable presence in continental and world football. The decision balanced the desire to deliver an engaging curtain-raiser for the Gamper Trophy with the practicalities and constraints of arranging a high-profile pre-season encounter. In the end, Al Ahly’s involvement promises a distinctive and competitive test for Barcelona as they prepare for the new season.
