Texas A&M coach Mike Elko has had a brisk offseason as he enters his third season at the helm, carrying high expectations after guiding the Aggies to their first-ever appearance in the College Football Playoff. Much of the excitement stems from quarterback Marcel Reed’s passing numbers and A&M’s defensive prowess, which helped the team rank among the national leaders in sacks.
Following two seasons in which Collin Klein served as the Aggies’ offensive coordinator, he left to become the head coach at Kansas State. In response, Elko promoted wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins to call the plays. Even though Wiggins lacked prior OC experience, he had shared duties as Klein’s co-offensive coordinator for the past two seasons, providing a bridge to the new play-calling role.
Reed threw for 3,169 yards and 25 touchdowns last season, but he’s been focused this offseason on avoiding a repeat of his 12 interceptions, which tied for the second-most in the SEC. The quarterback’s receiving corps has evolved as well, with Alabama transfer Isaiah Horton joining a group led by star junior Mario Craver. Craver is seen as a standout in what national observers consider an elite receiving rotation, especially after fellow star KC Concepcion — who led the Aggies in receiving last season — was selected 24th overall by the Cleveland Browns in the NFL Draft.
Among the other weapons at Reed’s disposal are sophomore running back Jamarion Morrow and freshman wide receiver Aaron Gregory. Both are reportedly working out with WR trainer James Everett Jr., a fact that has drawn attention from fans and analysts alike. For viewers who want a quick visual, a video below showcases both players performing agility drills. Gregory appears more developed physically already, while Morrow continues to impress as he competes for the starting running back role and looks like a solid one-cut back on the roster.
As the season approaches, the Aggies are focused on steady improvements and consistency from their offense, particularly with Reed’s decision-making and accuracy, the depth and versatility of the receiving corps, and the continued development of the run game. The defense remains a strength, and the team’s ability to protect the quarterback while generating pressure will be crucial to sustaining success.
