After a season-ending injury in 2024, Detroit Lions EDGE Aidan Hutchinson reminded the NFL that he remains one of the league’s most disruptive playmakers. The 6-foot-7, 268-pound pass rusher delivered a career-best 14.5 sacks during the Lions’ 2025 campaign, proving that his fractured tibia and fibula injury from 2024 did not derail his trajectory. While Hutchinson was busy authoring another standout season, Detroit secured a four-year, $180 million contract extension with the Michigan product midway through October last year. In addition to his 14.5 sacks, Hutchinson tallied 54 tackles, four forced fumbles, three passes defensed, and an interception. Following yet another elite season, he sits among the NFL’s top five edge rushers, as determined by league scouts, executives, and coaches.
Entering the 2026 season, Hutchinson is ranked as the NFL’s No. 5 edge rusher by those same evaluators. His distinctive skill set allows him to climb the charts with ease, drawing comparisons to fellow standout edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson’s peers in the league. Last season, Hutchinson ranked second in pressures (63), third in quarterback hits (35), tied for second in forced fumbles (four), and fourth in sacks (14.5). This was a comprehensive performance, especially impressive given he played more than half of 2024 with a significant leg injury. He logged 950 snaps, the most among defensive linemen.
“Skilled with his hands, possessing very good speed-to-power to keep offensive tackles off balance, and, above all, his motor is nonstop,” one veteran NFL defensive coach noted. Hutchinson’s early-career trajectory is remarkable: he is the first player since 1982 to record 40 or more sacks and five or more interceptions within his first four NFL seasons. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler highlighted that Hutchinson’s feat places him among the league’s most dynamic young edge defenders, and among the votes collected from league scouts, executives, and coaches, Hutchinson was positioned as high as No. 2 and no lower than No. 8 in the rankings for the top edge rusher in the league. His No. 5 standing marks a two-spot rise from the No. 7 ranking he held at this time last year.
The four edge rushers ranked ahead of Hutchinson were Los Angeles Rams star Myles Garrett (No. 1), Green Bay Packers sensation Micah Parsons (No. 2), Houston Texans standout Will Anderson Jr. (No. 3), and Las Vegas Raiders pass rusher Maxx Crosby (No. 4). In addition to Hutchinson and Parsons, Chicago Bears EDGE Montez Sweat—who recorded 10 sacks and three forced fumbles last season—was the only other NFC North edge defender to receive votes.
