LSU Basketball loses out on top prospect

By admin — In News — July 11, 2026

With Will Wade taking charge of LSU Basketball, a complete overhaul of the roster was essential, and thus far the program has begun to address that need. It’s far from finished, yet it represents a solid start. Even with a group that includes experienced players, the 2026 recruiting class holds the potential for high-end talent that could impact the season. Should LSU manage to land one of those top prospects, it would be a game-changing development for Wade’s inaugural year.
One target LSU pursued was power forward Marcus Spears Jr., though that pursuit was for the 2027 cycle. Fans will recognize the Spears name: Marcus Spears Jr.’s father, Marcus Spears, is a notable LSU football figure, and Aiysha Spears, Marcus Sr.’s wife, played for LSU’s women’s basketball program and was selected in the top 10 of the WNBA draft. The family’s deep ties to LSU presented an intriguing pathway to signing the top prospect.
Ultimately, the bid for Spears Jr. did not come to fruition, and it was recently announced that Spears Jr. will join Texas after reclassifying to 2026. Had LSU secured Spears Jr.’s commitment for 2026 or even for a later year, he would have ranked as the program’s second-highest-rated prospect since the introduction of star ratings, underscoring just how significant a recruit he would have represented.
With Spears Jr. out of the picture, LSU now faces a strategic choice: devote efforts to persuading 2026 prospects to pledge to the program or shift focus to 2027 prospects. Given the current emphasis on older players, prioritizing talent for 2027 could prove to be the most prudent approach. The program will likely weigh its options carefully, balancing immediate impact for Wade’s first season with long-term potential as it builds toward 2027 and beyond. This decision will shape LSU’s trajectory as Wade continues to assemble a competitive roster and optimize recruiting momentum for the years ahead.
