A football-obsessed man has transformed his decking and garden in St George’s crosses, much to his wife’s disapproval. Alfie Patterson, from Blyth in Northumberland, has draped almost every inch of his outdoor space with flags, to the point where even the garden gnomes are dressed in England kits. The decorated area will serve as a gathering spot for his family and friends to watch England’s World Cup semi-final against Norway, a match that kicks off at 22:00 BST.
Patterson said his wife was “a little bit upset” when he painted her favourite decking in red and white, but the couple reached a compromise after he promised to repaint it all white in time for Christmas. He explained, “It’s going to look like snow and give the winter effect, so now she’s quite happy.”
The garden party setup is part of Patterson’s tradition of using his outdoor space to bring loved ones together around football. He described his life as revolving around his grandchildren and football, noting that he had given up his 34-year passion for caring for racing pigeons to spend more time with family.
In his assessment of England’s chances against Norway, Patterson singled out defender Dan Burn—who usually plays for Newcastle United—and believed he could be key in containing Norway’s formidable striker Erling Haaland, who features for Manchester City. He argued that while Haaland is a dangerous presence, Burn’s role could prove decisive in England’s bid to advance.
As for the bigger picture, the winner of this semi-final will go on to face either Argentina or Switzerland in the last four on 15 July. Patterson, who otherwise favours Sunderland AFC, described the game’s outcome as a “win-win” for him because he had placed a side bet on Norway.
The story follows the same day England prepares to face Haaland, with the media and fans debating whether his name can be claimed or leveraged in the national pursuit of victory. Other related headlines include England’s open-air setting in warm weather, Norway’s potential edge, and the prospect of pubs staying open for the full Norway game, even if kick-off is delayed for better SEO.
