James Vowles confirms Williams review after F1 development rate concerns

By admin — In News — July 11, 2026

Williams team principal James Vowles has admitted that the Grove outfit is not developing its car quickly enough to fulfill its goals of climbing the Formula 1 standings. After a tough British Grand Prix, the team has launched a rigorous two-week review to scrutinize its upgrade programme and determine the path forward. In the latest episode of The Vowles Verdict, the Williams chief reflected on the upgrades introduced at Silverstone. Although new components were added for the British Grand Prix, Vowles conceded that the overall performance gains were not sufficient to push the team higher up the grid.
“I would say right now what’s clear is our rate of bringing performance to the car—though that’s a nuanced point—is not at the pace required for us to move forward,” Vowles explained. To address this, Williams has initiated a review of the upgrades implemented between the British and Belgian Grands Prix, with a study set to take place at Spa-Francorchamps from 17-19 July.
“Step one of all of that is to ensure we take time to fully understand not just what we’ve done in Silverstone, but really what we’ve accomplished across the entire season,” he said. “All of them contain clues and evidence about what went well and what didn’t, and how quickly we evaluate that will typically be completed within the next two weeks. That will then define what we do in Spa, what we do in Budapest, and how we shape the remainder of the season and the plan for next year.”
Vowles added that, as with any Formula 1 outfit, highs and lows, learning experiences, and occasional failures are part of the game, and expectations can shift from week to week. “But it’s the nature of a business that’s constantly bringing performance—introducing elements that didn’t exist before. They didn’t exist in the world, and while no one else may provide you with data exactly like ours, no one else has done it in the same way. So we have to be learning on the fly as a result.”
Despite the current challenges, Vowles offered a positive note: “What I’m pleased with is that we have a strong culture of openness, learning, and turnaround speed. And for me, that is what defines a team.” At present, Williams sits eighth in the Constructors’ Championship with 11 points after nine rounds of the 2026 season.
