Ole Miss signee Taj Marchand picked by Tampa Bay Rays in 2026 MLB Draft

By admin — In News — July 11, 2026

The Tampa Bay Rays selected Taj Marchand, a baseball signee from Ole Miss, in the 2026 MLB Draft on July 11. Marchand went No. 33 overall in Competitive Balance Round A, marking the first Ole Miss signee chosen in this draft. He now has the option to sign with the Rays or enroll at Ole Miss for the 2027 season.
Marchand’s slot value for his pick is $2.97 million. At 17 years old, Marchand stands 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 200 pounds, and he is considered a projectable infielder from James Island, South Carolina. He played high school baseball at James Island High School, where he was a standout who helped his teams win three state championships. He captured the 4-A title as a sophomore and the 5-A championship during both his junior and senior years. In high school, Marchand primarily played shortstop and showcased a strong throwing arm that is expected to improve as he matures.
Physically, Marchand projects as a right-handed hitter with above-average bat speed and an aggressive approach at the plate. He has built a reputation as a confident, swing-for-impact batter who can drive balls with regularity. In addition to his hitting, he demonstrated the versatility to pitch as a reliever in high school, throwing with a fastball measured up to 92 mph. Offensively, Marchand produced an eye-catching high school season in 2026, batting .531 with 13 home runs, 57 runs scored, and 45 RBIs, underscoring his power and run-producing capabilities.
Marchand’s profile also includes a strong athletic background from his prep days, where he showed a combination of bat speed, power potential, and solid fielding mechanics that give him multiple paths to contribute at the professional level. While valued for his hitting ability and arm strength, evaluators note his offensive approach and willingness to swing aggressively, which can translate well in a pro environment with further refinement and development.
This report on Marchand is part of a broader coverage of Ole Miss prospects and the university’s 2026 signing class, as reported by Sam Hutchens, who covers Ole Miss for the Clarion Ledger. For further information or updates, Hutchens can be reached at Shutchens@gannett.com or via X (formerly Twitter) at @Sam_Hutchens__. The original coverage, which appeared with Mississippi Clarion Ledger, emphasized Marchand’s selection by the Rays and his potential to sign for the 2026 season rather than heading to Ole Miss in 2027.
