Raynham’s Brody Bumila is headed for Texas. On Saturday, July 11, the former Bishop Feehan standout, the 2025-26 MaxPreps Male National Athlete of the Year and the 2025-26 Gatorade Massachusetts Baseball Player of the Year, was selected 89th overall by the Texas Rangers in the 2026 MLB Draft at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. The 6-foot-9 left-hander attracted national headlines and drew MLB scouts all spring with a fastball that routinely reached triple digits. He finished the spring 5-0, allowing nine runs (seven earned) on eight hits and 14 walks while striking out 96 in 44 1/3 innings. He also delivered a Feehan record 20 strikeouts on senior night in his lone complete game, all while operating under a pitch and innings limit that helped propel the Shamrocks to a run to the MIAA Division 1 final.
If Bumila signs, it may be some time before he takes the mound for any Rangers affiliates. On Monday, July 6, an MRI disclosed another injury to his left elbow’s UCL, following prior internal brace surgery in 2025. If surgery becomes necessary, Bumila could be sidelined for more than a year. Yet his evident talent and potential were enough for the Rangers to take a chance on him, and he will now work with the organization to prepare for a return to the mound and chase his lifelong dream of pitching in the majors.
Bumila is the fourth Massachusetts athlete taken in the opening three rounds of this summer’s major North American sports drafts. Brockton’s AJ Dybansta went first overall in the 2026 NBA Draft to the Washington Wizards on June 23. In the NHL Draft, Norwell’s Casey Mutryn was selected 38th overall by the Seattle Kraken on June 27, and Needham’s Rian Chudzinski went 82nd to the Anaheim Ducks.
The Rangers’ farm system ranked 27th overall in Baseball America’s midseason rankings released on Tuesday, July 7. The Rangers’ minor-league affiliates, from lowest to highest level, are the ACL Rangers (Rookie), Hickory Crawdads (A), Hub City (Spartanburg) (Advanced A), Frisco RoughRiders (AA), and Round Rock Express (AAA). Bumila had committed to the University of Texas in 2024 and could still choose to enroll at Texas instead of signing with the Rangers. If he returns to college, he would not be eligible for another draft until after his 21st birthday in 2029. A Texas or Greater Taunton connection could reappear next year, as former Taunton High softball standout and 2023-24 Gatorade Massachusetts Softball Player of the Year Sam Lincoln transferred to Texas softball from Texas Tech.
