Mardy Fish eyes third American Century Championship title as star-studded leaderboard looms

Mardy Fish surged into the lead on Saturday at Lake Tahoe, mounting a late push to grab a share of the top spot. The former winner of the American Century Championship in 2020 and 2024 carded an eagle on Edgewood Tahoe South’s par-5 18th to cap his second round and move ahead of defending champ Joe Pavelski. The 3 he notched on that hole translated into 6 points under the ACC’s modified Stableford scoring system, lifting Fish to 52 points after 36 holes.
Pavelski sits four points behind with 48, while Annika Sorenstam is just three back at 47 and Steph Curry trails with 41. With a full 18 holes remaining on Sunday, the trio of Fish, Pavelski, and Sorenstam remains squarely in the mix. Curry, the 2023 champion, will need to mount a charge to contend, having posted six birdies on Friday but failing to replicate that burst of scoring on Saturday.
Sorenstam, who has never won the ACC and whose best finish was runner-up in 2014, is starting to find momentum after a rocky start to the first round that featured 16 pars, an eagle, and a bogey. In the second round she notched five birdies to three bogeys, signaling a potential late surge for the golf legend as she climbs the standings.
If Fish can hold on to his advantage, he would join Tony Romo and Mark Mulder as three-time ACC champions; Rick Rhoden, with eight titles, remains the all-time leader in ACC history. The conclusion of the 2026 American Century Championship is set to air on NBC and Peacock on Sunday from 2:30 to 6 p.m. ET, offering fans a chance to witness whether Fish can clinch another title or if Pavelski, Sorenstam, or another competitor will seize the moment in the final round.
