Disrespectful Decision Made by Mario Saint-Supery Leaves Gonzaga Scrambling

By admin — In News — July 11, 2026

I needed a moment to cool off and get my thoughts in order. Point guard Mario Saint-Supery announced on his Instagram that he is leaving the Gonzaga Bulldogs to return home to Spain. The 20-year-old will now join Valencia Basket in the Liga ACB on a reported four-year deal worth north of $15 million, per CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander, positioning him among the top earners in European basketball.
Choosing to depart at this point in the offseason raises questions about loyalty and leadership from a player who has long been viewed as a top-floor general and someone expected to elevate Gonzaga to a national breakout in his sophomore year. For context, when Filip Petrusev left Gonzaga after the 2019-20 season to play for Mega Basket in the ABA League, he did so while still in Serbia and just before the official offseason workouts began in the summer. Saint-Supery’s decision to return to Spokane to attend Domantas Sabonis’ ceremony after competing for Spain in the FIBA World Cup qualifiers feels like a provocative, ill-timed move that blindsided coach Mark Few.
His sudden decision has forced the staff to scramble for depth at the lead guard position, especially with a limited NCAA transfer portal pool. It also has ramifications for his former teammates, notably sophomore wing Davis Fogle and sophomore center Massamba Diop, whose NBA Draft stock could be affected. Saint-Supery practiced with the Zags just 24 hours before the news broke late last night. His move signals a broader pattern in which international prospects and EuroLeague-funded offers threaten the stability of programs in the Pacific Northwest. The influence of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals in the NCAA has contributed to this shift, challenging the traditional integrity of college basketball.
Gonzaga’s updated roster now sits at 13 of 15 possible spots. The projected starting lineup appears to be: senior guard Nathan De Sousa, sophomore guard Isiah Harwell, sophomore wing Davis Fogle, redshirt senior forward Braden Huff, and sophomore center Massamba Diop. De Sousa, the 23-year-old French guard from Cholet Basket in the LNB Pro A, is expected to take the lead in the offense once he arrives on campus for his lone season of collegiate eligibility, with Fogle likely assuming more on-ball opportunities and ball-handling responsibilities as well.
There is no need to pressure the 2027 four-star point guard Dooney Johnson to reclassify and arrive a year early, which could disrupt the momentum he’s currently building at the high school level. The reality is that Gonzaga’s search for continuity might shift back toward the international market, with assistant coach Jorge Sanz leveraging Saint-Supery’s departure and the resulting financial leverage to pursue new options.
I am appalled by Saint-Supery’s untimely action and the way it was handled. It’s a move that stings more than similar decisions by other players, underscoring the increasing complexities of navigating talent, loyalty, and the evolving landscape of college basketball.
