Rotherham boss confirms major career lifeline for Brandon Williams

Rotherham United head coach Alex Bruce, son of the club’s legendary former boss Steve Bruce, has given former Manchester United defender Brandon Williams a significant career lifeline. Williams, who is eager to restart his playing career after being released by Hull City in February, has faced a challenging few years since leaving United for good. He spent 20 months without a club before signing with Hull, but he managed only one appearance for the Tigers before parting ways by mutual consent.
The 27-year-old full-back has also dealt with personal turmoil, including a suspended 14-month prison sentence handed down last May after a 2023 Audi A3 crash. He was convicted of dangerous driving, with the court heard that he was driving at nearly 100mph at the time of the collision. Williams has been open about his struggles with depression and mental health issues, continuing to navigate the pressures that have accompanied his professional and personal life.
A member of United’s academy who saw significant time with the senior side, Williams is currently on trial with League Two club Rotherham. He featured for the second half of the Millers’ 1-0 summer friendly win over nearby non-league side Parkgate, signaling his intent to prove himself in pre-season.
Bruce spoke to the Rotherham Advertiser about the potential for a permanent deal, highlighting Williams’s credentials. “Brandon has a good pedigree. He’s worked with the very best and played against the best. He was showing me a game between Manchester United and Liverpool at Anfield where he was part of the match,” Bruce said. “We know what he’s capable of.”
Acknowledging the recent hardships Williams has faced, Bruce added, “He’s had a tough couple of years. He hasn’t had a proper pre-season for two or three years, and he’s had a few injuries. It’s about assessing his current condition, getting a solid pre-season into him, and then deciding the next steps.”
Regarding the contract possibility, Bruce indicated that Williams will continue training with the squad while they conduct a thorough evaluation. “He’s going to keep training, we’re going to have a good look at him. He’s enjoyed his time here so far. We’ll give him time, raise his fitness levels, and then, when both parties are satisfied, we’ll make a decision.”
Williams amassed 51 appearances for Manchester United’s first team during his time at the club. His trial with Rotherham marks a potential turning point in his career as he seeks to rebuild his playing days after a turbulent period away from the game at the highest level.
