Phoenix Mercury’s blowout loss to Las Vegas Aces adds to growing fan frustration

LAS VEGAS — Patience among Phoenix Mercury fans is thinning after Saturday’s 106-58 blowout loss to the Las Vegas Aces. From the opening minutes, Phoenix was forced into catch-up mode. The Mercury managed just nine points in the first quarter and trailed 57-22 at halftime, unable to slow Las Vegas’ high-powered offense. The Aces shot 51% from the floor and forced 18 turnovers that translated into 24 points, while Phoenix struggled with efficiency, shooting only 35% from the field and 23% from three-point range.
The defeat dropped Phoenix to 8-16 on the season and extended their losing streak to three games. More troubling than the record is the team’s apparent lack of competitiveness, as Saturday’s 48-point margin matched the third-largest victory in WNBA history for Las Vegas.
The game’s poor showing has left Mercury fans and observers alike searching for explanations. Head coach Nate Tibbetts spoke bluntly after the loss, acknowledging the need for a strong response. “That was ugly, disappointing, all of the above,” he said. “We’re going to find out a lot about us on Monday, see what kind of response we have… But the reality is we can’t have any more of these. It’s time for us to make a move if we’re going to make a move. You don’t want to come out and play like that. That’s extremely disappointing for everyone involved. The players, the staff, the organization, the fans, everybody. That’s completely unacceptable.”
The Mercury have long been held to championship standards by their fan base, with playoff basketball expected every season. This loss, combined with ongoing inconsistencies, has only intensified the questions surrounding the team’s direction and performance. With the playoff race tightening, Phoenix faces mounting pressure to show tangible improvement. A repeat of this kind of stretch could jeopardize their postseason hopes, something no fan wants to see.
Looking ahead, Phoenix will travel to Minneapolis to face the Minnesota Lynx on Monday, July 13, at 6 p.m. local time, as the team searches for a more competitive showing and a much-needed win to steady the season.
