The Las Vegas Raiders have done an excellent job easing rookie No. 1 overall quarterback Fernando Mendoza into their program. Typically, the expectations placed on a top overall pick are brutal from the moment they step onto the field. To help mitigate that pressure, the Raiders brought in veteran Kirk Cousins, whose familiarity with new head coach Klint Kubiak makes him a credible option to start in Week 1. There are clear advantages to beginning the season with Cousins at the helm. Starting the year with him allows Mendoza to spend time developing behind the scenes, shielded from the constant weekly scrutiny that comes with being the starter. In today’s NFL, teams rarely embrace the wait-and-develop approach with a quarterback, but there’s value in taking a more measured path and giving the rookie a chance to learn.
If Cousins starts Week 1 against the Miami Dolphins, all eyes will immediately be on Mendoza’s eventual debut. Unless the Raiders are genuine playoff contenders with Cousins, the expectation would be that Mendoza eventually takes over as the starter. The organization won’t want to let Mendoza’s rookie season go by without giving him meaningful playing time. In an ideal progression, the bye week is often the best window to prepare a rookie for his first career start. However, the Raiders don’t have a bye until Week 13, which pushes Mendoza’s first possible start to Week 14 against the Los Angeles Chargers. That schedule would provide only five weeks as the starter, leaving Kubiak to decide whether that sample size is enough to reasonably gauge Mendoza’s rookie campaign.
If the team opts to insert Mendoza earlier than Week 14, the challenge becomes identifying a favorable matchup on the schedule. Finding an opponent that presents a softer test on paper is easier said than done. Perhaps Week 8 against the New York Jets represents the best theoretical opportunity, yet that game would be followed by three formidable defenses—the San Francisco 49ers, the Seattle Seahawks, and the Denver Broncos—making any early introduction particularly demanding.
Ultimately, if Cousins is the Week 1 starter for the Raiders, Kubiak faces a tough decision about when Mendoza should see his first significant action. The balance between preserving Mendoza’s development and seizing every opportunity to evaluate him in real game conditions will guide the coaching staff’s approach throughout the season. This topic has been explored in depth on Raiders Wire, in the piece examining which schedule matchup could serve as Mendoza’s debut.
