The Boston Celtics are assembling a new roster around Jayson Tatum. Paul George is in the building. Mitchell Robinson has signed to shore up the frontcourt. Mike Conley brings veteran leadership. The supporting cast looks different from anything Tatum has played with during his time in Boston.
Yet everything hinges on one factor: the version of Tatum who takes the court in October. He suffered an Achilles injury during the 2025 playoffs and missed most of last season. He returned for 16 regular-season games and played in six playoff contests before Boston’s season ended at the hands of the Philadelphia 76ers. Now, Tatum enters a crucial moment with a full offseason ahead and an encouraging update from Las Vegas from someone who knows him as well as anyone in the organization.
Amile Jefferson, Boston Celtics assistant coach, is leading Boston’s Summer League team in Las Vegas. After Saturday’s practice, he addressed Tatum’s recovery and what the games he played last season could mean for the path forward.
“Those games were a great head start for him in getting back to who he is,” Jefferson said. “They’ll be super impactful and important for him.” He added that when Tatum returned last season, it looked like he had not missed a beat. “He came back hard, he looked like himself, took a brief break after the season, and now he’s back in full stride. I’m excited for him and for our team this year.”

Jefferson was also asked about Tatum’s current offseason workouts, even those taking place in Las Vegas. He highlighted Tatum’s ongoing grind as a key indicator of what lies ahead for the Celtics, underscoring the belief that the star forward’s development could drive Boston’s trajectory this season. Jefferson’s observations point toward a season in which Tatum rebounds fully, reasserts his dominance, and leads a transformed Celtics roster into a new era of competitiveness in the NBA. The tone from Las Vegas suggests a fresh start, a broader supporting cast, and a Tatum who is more prepared than ever to carry the load for a team aiming to contend at the highest level.
