Purple Row After Dark: Is the Derby still a Home Run?

By admin — In News — July 12, 2026

I have always found the Home Run Derby to be one of the most exhilarating events on the baseball calendar. There is something simple and satisfying about watching players swing with the full force of their effort and send baseballs flying as far as possible. Yet this season a combination of factors has dampened my usual enthusiasm for the event. The rules have shifted away from a strict time limit to a fixed number of swings, which changes the rhythm and urgency that fans have come to expect. And Hunter Goodman, a player tied for fourth in the majors in home runs, wasn’t named a participant. That exclusion, especially from a Rockies hitter who appeared to have a legitimate case to participate, took some of the excitement out of what is otherwise a sensational spectacle. It’s not that the Derby lacks star power—there are still plenty of compelling names in the field (Jordan Walker among them)—and it will undoubtedly be entertaining to watch balls get launched into the stands. But I can’t shake the sense that something essential is missing from the experience I’ve grown to love in recent years.
So, the central question for me today is this: if you were the commissioner, would you consider making changes to the Home Run Derby? Would you advocate altering the actual format or rules by which the event is played, or might you push for a different approach to participant selection? Would you experiment with different seeding methods, new round structures, or perhaps a more transparent and expansive invitation process to ensure deserving players aren’t overlooked? These are the kinds of questions I’m grappling with as I think about how to preserve the Derby’s magic while addressing the elements that have left me feeling a touch underwhelmed this season.
If you have thoughts, I’d love to hear them in the comments. How would you reshape the Home Run Derby if you wore the commissioner’s hat? Do you favor tweaking the rules to restore urgency and unpredictability, or would you pursue enhancements to the selection process to ensure a broader, more compelling slate of participants? Share your ideas, experiences, and visions for the Derby’s future, and let’s discuss how to keep the event thrilling for fans year after year.
