Los Angeles Sparks fire GM Raegan Pebley midway through her third season

The Los Angeles Sparks have managed to string together consecutive victories over the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever, yet the franchise’s top executives appear dissatisfied with the team’s overall direction. On Sunday, July 12, the Sparks announced that Raegan Pebley has been dismissed from her role as general manager, marking the end of her three-season tenure in Los Angeles. Under Pebley’s watch, the Sparks posted a 39-66 record.
“We are grateful to Raegan for her leadership and commitment to the Los Angeles Sparks and women’s basketball,” said Eric Holoman, a Sparks managing partner and governor, in a formal statement. “Her work on the Sparks roster and the player experience will have a lasting positive impact on our organization. We sincerely thank her for all she has invested in the Sparks and wish her continued success in her next chapter.” In the interim, the Sparks will divide general manager responsibilities between Zach Knowlton and Nate Nielsen, both of whom previously served as Pebley’s assistants.
Pebley was brought aboard in January 2024, taking over from Karen Bryant, who had succeeded Derek Fisher. Pebley did not have prior experience as a professional sports executive and had spent the previous twenty years as a head coach in women’s college basketball. Over two decades as a head coach, she compiled a 297-313 record across stints at Utah State, Fresno State, and Texas Christian University, leading teams to two NCAA tournament appearances. Before transitioning into coaching, Pebley played two seasons in the WNBA with the Utah Starzz and the Cleveland Rockers.
During Pebley’s tenure as general manager, the Sparks underwent a coaching transition, removing Curt Miller and hiring Lynne Roberts away from the University of Utah to take the helm. The franchise also invested draft picks in players such as Cameron Brink, Rickea Jackson, Sarah Ashlee Barker, and Ta’Niya Latson; of these selections, Brink is the only player who remains with the organization today.
In Roberts’ second season guiding the team, the Sparks stood at 10-11 and weathered injuries to key players like Kelsey Plum and Brink. The team traded Rickea Jackson for Ariel Atkins in the offseason and added former MVP Nneka Ogwumike to the roster. Currently sitting ninth in the league standings, the Sparks find themselves on the brink of missing the playoffs for the sixth straight season.
The Sparks’ ownership group is notable, including NBA legend Magic Johnson, tennis icon Billie Jean King, billionaire Mark Walter, LA Dodgers president Stan Kasten, and other prominent figures. This move comes amid disappointment over the team’s trajectory, even as a recent stretch of wins suggests there may be a short-term improvement on the court.
This recap is drawn from a USA TODAY report detailing the Sparks’ decision to terminate Raegan Pebley’s contract as general manager midway through her third season, with the aim of aligning leadership with a clearer, more successful long-term plan.
