Sinner fights back to down Zverev and retain Wimbledon title

Italy’s Jannik Sinner, the top seed at Wimbledon, retained his men’s singles crown by coming from a set down to defeat German second seed Alexander Zverev in a high-caliber final on Sunday. The match concluded with Sinner edging past Zverev 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, 6-4, marking Sinner’s fifth Grand Slam title at 24 years old and his first major triumph of the year. He had previously knocked out record Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals to book his place in the title match.
Sinner extended his impressive run against Zverev to 10 consecutive wins, as the German began strongly but seemed briefly troubled by a minor knee issue as the match progressed. Zverev had reason for optimism after capturing his first Grand Slam at the French Open last month, a victory that followed a shock second-round exit for Sinner at Roland Garros after a surprise defeat to Juan Manuel Cerúndolo. The German, who had been buoyed by the French Open triumph, continued to press at Wimbledon and looked to become the first player born in the 1990s to win the men’s Wimbledon title.
With Carlos Alcaraz sidelined by injury, Zverev leveraged the absence of the Australian Open champion to reach both the Wimbledon final and the French Open final season, and his performance at Wimbledon briefly put him in position to overtake the Spaniard as world No. 2 on Monday. However, the dream of becoming the first 1990s-born Wimbledon champion for men was dashed as Sinner clinched the title.
Looking ahead, Sinner will approach the hard-court season with strong momentum ahead of the US Open, scheduled for August 30 through September 13. The upcoming months will test Sinner’s consistency on faster surfaces, especially as the aim shifts toward defending hard-court success and maintaining top form into the autumn Major swing. There remains uncertainty over whether Alcaraz will be fit to resume competition after his wrist injury, which could impact the pecking order at the sport’s elite level as players prepare for the US Open and beyond. As the curtain falls on Wimbledon, Sinner’s triumph underscores his status as a perennial title contender and a central figure in men’s tennis’s next generation, ready to challenge the sport’s established greats across the season’s marquee events.
