Before the series finale of a three-game set against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Milwaukee Brewers announced a flurry of roster moves. The club acquired infielder Braden Shewmake from the Houston Astros in exchange for cash considerations. In corresponding moves, Milwaukee placed right-hander Brandon Woodruff on the 60-day injured list and recalled right-hander Coleman Crow from the 15-day injured list, optioning him to Triple-A Nashville. Additionally, the Brewers designated utilityman Greg Jones for assignment, clearing a roster spot for Shewmake.
Jones’s journey to this moment began when the Tampa Bay Rays selected him in the first round (No. 22 overall) of the 2019 MLB Draft out of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Earlier, he’d been drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 17th round of the 2017 MLB Draft out of high school, but chose to pursue college baseball instead. The Rays later traded Jones to the Colorado Rockies for left-hander Joe Rock on March 21, 2024. Jones made his MLB debut with Colorado in 2024, tallying six plate appearances, going 1-for-5 with a home run, an RBI, a walk, and four strikeouts.
On March 26, 2025, the Chicago White Sox claimed Jones off waivers from the Rockies. He appeared in three games for Chicago, registering two strikeouts in 0-for-2 hitting over the two brief stints and had one stolen base to show for his major-league time with the White Sox. With Milwaukee this season, Jones has gone 2-for-23, driving in one run, stealing one base, and striking out ten times across 12 games.
Jones has posted a solid minor-league track record, slashing .264/.353/.430 with 52 home runs, 208 RBIs, and 193 stolen bases across 420 games over seven seasons. In Triple-A play, he’s produced a .264/.351/.431 line. Prior to 2022, MLB Pipeline rated him as the No. 91 overall prospect in baseball. A notable hurdle for sustained major-league time has been his high strikeout rate; he has fanned 613 times in 1,826 minor-league plate appearances. While his overall minor-league numbers aren’t poor, his recurring swing-and-miss tendency makes it challenging to secure long-term success at the highest level.
As this report was filed, the Brewers were in the middle of the series finale against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. The Pirates appeared poised to sweep, holding a 12-run lead in the seventh inning, a development that underscored the urgency of Milwaukee’s roster moves as they race the clock to finish the series with a win.
