Cowboys Behind The Scenes: Brian Schottenheimer Reveals Caleb Downs Draft-Day Truths

The Dallas Cowboys turned in a standout NFL Draft performance for many observers, and a lot of the credit goes to one pivotal pick: Caleb Downs. Widely regarded as one of the top defensive prospects in the draft, Downs slid to Dallas, who ultimately moved up one spot with the Miami Dolphins to secure the Ohio State star. Now emerging as a cornerstone of Christian Parker’s revamped defense, Downs has delivered exactly what the Cowboys hoped for. In OTAs and minicamp, he has lived up to expectations, with head coach Brian Schottenheimer noting that he “doesn’t make the same mistake twice.”
Cowboys Nation celebrated when Downs landed in Dallas, and the team’s draft-night plans remained shrouded in mystery, as is customary in such high-stakes negotiations. Schottenheimer, appearing on the Twins Take podcast, revealed that the Cowboys had a deal in place with Kansas City to move up in the first round. “We had four guys targeted that we really felt strongly would fit great in our culture and our football team, and Caleb was at the top of that list,” he said. “We had a trade in place with Kansas City that we were hoping to be able to make a move for. Well, they moved up early for Mansor Delane. And so we were like, okay, we’ve lost that opportunity.”
When the Chiefs selected Delane, Dallas’ attention shifted to the next few picks, knowing the choice there could significantly shape their options. Early on, Sonny Styles, Jordyn Tyson, and Spencer Fano all went in the top 10, and the New York Giants emerged as the team most clearly linked to Downs. If there ever were a pick that could derail Dallas’ offseason, that one seemed like it.
The Giants’ selection of Styles and Downs would have been a nightmare scenario for Dallas, but fortune smiled on the Cowboys when New York passed on Downs, choosing Francis Mauigoa instead. As soon as that happened, Dallas moved decisively, with Downs still available on the board. “As Caleb started to fall, the Giants were on the clock at 10; we thought they would take him because we knew Coach Harbaugh had talked about how much he saw him as a generational safety,” Schottenheimer explained. “When they didn’t take him, he fell to 11. The phone rang. We were talking back and forth with Miami. We could have sat and waited, but we were concerned someone might move up ahead of us at 12, and everyone knew that we were interested in Caleb. When Jerry and Stephen acted quickly along with Will McClay, and made the move, we were stoked. It was great.”
Stoked indeed, as Dallas wound up with one of the league’s premier defensive prospects without surrendering a steep price. Yes, the draft sometimes feels like a bit of luck when players slide and a team is able to pounce at the right moment, but the Cowboys’ move paid off handsomely. Downs’ arrival fits the club’s long-term defensive vision and immediately adds juice to a retooled unit. He has responded to the opportunity with promise and production, fulfilling the expectation of a player who could anchor a reformatted Cowboys defense for years to come.
In the end, Dallas didn’t have to fork over a fortune to secure his services, and Downs’ early impact suggests he could be a linchpin for the scheme laid out by Parker and Schottenheimer. As the offseason progresses, the pairing of Downs’ versatility and Dallas’ strategic approach looks to have given the Cowboys a solid foundation for a defense that will be tested in a tough NFC landscape. The combination of fortuitous fall for Downs, swift action by the Cowboys’ front office, and a coaching staff that believes in his fit within the culture all contributed to a draft-day win that Cowboys fans can rally around as the season approaches.
