Sonis scores as Summit and Dash settle for a 2-2 draw in the NWSL

Janine Sonis contributed a goal and an assist as the Denver Summit fought to a 2-2 draw with the Houston Dash on Sunday in the National Women’s Soccer League. Sonis delivered a perfectly weighted ground corner to forward Yazmeen Ryan for Denver’s opener in the 12th minute. Ryan, who led Houston in scoring last season while earning both the Golden Boot and Newcomer of the Year honors, twisted past a Dash defender and fired a near-post shot past Houston goalkeeper Jane Campbell to put Denver ahead. Houston responded quickly, cutting the deficit to one when forward Kat Rader tucked a shot past Summit keeper Abby Smith less than three minutes later. Rader, 22, has carried her prolific scoring form into the professional ranks after netting 32 goals for Duke.
As halftime approached, Denver found themselves awarded a penalty when rookie defender Cate Hardin mistimed a challenge on Summit forward Ally Brazier inside the box, handing Sonis a chance to convert against her former teammate Campbell. Sonis, who spent two seasons with Houston from 2016 to 2017, converted to restore Denver’s lead at 2-1.
Houston leveled the score in the 48th minute as midfielder Maggie Graham’s cross found Linda Ullmark, who notched her first professional goal. The match remained in reach for the Dash, but Ryanne Brown would break through for Seattle in a different fixture later in the day, as the Reign beat their rival Portland 2-0 in Seattle, highlighting a different dialogue in this Saturday-Sunday slate of NWSL action.
In Seattle’s victory over Portland, Brown opened the scoring in the seventh minute, sprinting onto a ball that bypassed Portland’s back line and left Mackenzie Arnold facing an unguarded net. It marked Brown’s first start of the season after returning from an ACL injury the previous year. The Reign’s momentum continued after halftime as Sam Meza delivered a sequence of tackles that helped regain possession and sent a cross toward Maddie Mercado, who headed home the second goal in the 44th minute. Seattle’s defense, led by goalkeeper Cassie Miller, held Portland at bay as the Reign recorded their first win in five matches.
Minnesota, Seattle, and Portland’s clashes are known for their intensity, given the Cascadia rivalry that formed long before the NWSL’s inception in 2013, drawing from the longstanding cross-border competition between the Sounders and Timbers in Major League Soccer. The weekend’s results underscored the fierce rivalry and heightened competition that continue to shape the league’s narrative.
