Local youth soccer players inspired by World Cup tournament

The World Cup has been playing out in the United States for more than a month now, with matches staged right on our homeland, drawing in fans of every age—from the oldest supporters to the youngest. One ninth-grade player, Emerson Preall, captured a shared sentiment: “One of the biggest things I loved was seeing the small countries that you don’t usually see. They become fan favorites, like Cape Verde. I loved watching Vozinha. Especially as a goalkeeper myself, I loved seeing him.” An eighth-grader, Maizie Birke, echoed the sentiment, adding, “I really liked watching all the different teams, not just Team U.S.A. I enjoyed watching the smaller nations as well. Cape Verde was also one of my favorites.”
Emerson and Maizie both play for the Girls U14 Division 1 Victor Soccer Club, part of the Rochester District Youth Soccer League. They agree that watching the World Cup unfold over the past weeks has invigorated their own soccer journeys. Emerson reflected, “I’ve always been passionate about playing soccer, but seeing these players inspires me to become a role model for my teammates and to work even harder.” The event’s presence on American soil has demonstrated to young athletes nationwide that the World Cup can be more than something they simply watch on television.
“I think it shows them that it’s attainable,” said Ashley DiDia, the Victor Soccer Club Vice President. “They see that if you put in the work and listen to your coaches, you could someday play on that level. Obviously, it’s a lofty goal, but that’s what youth soccer is all about: nurturing that dream.” Yet to turn that inspiration into lasting growth, the effort must extend beyond the final whistle of the World Cup.
Ashley explained that true progress begins at the club level. “I think club boards and coaches need to ride this momentum and remember that we can improve the pathways that bring talented players to the next level. By identifying individuals who harbor a true passion for the game and bringing them into the soccer communities, we’ll continue to strengthen youth soccer as we move forward.” The overarching message is clear: sustaining momentum requires deliberate, organized action within clubs to cultivate the talent and dedication necessary to help eager players reach their goals.
