Diego Forlan appointed Uruguay manager following Marcelo Bielsa’s exit

Uruguay has tapped one of its most iconic figures to steer the national team into a new era. The announcement came from the president of the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF), Ignacio Alonso, who confirmed that Diego Forlan will assume the role of interim head coach following Marcelo Bielsa’s departure. Forlan, a legend of the national team, will lead La Celeste until March 2027, with the federation planning to review his position at that time.
The appointment follows Bielsa’s exit after Uruguay endured a disappointing campaign at the 2026 World Cup. Despite entering the tournament with high hopes, Uruguay failed to advance beyond the group stage, collecting only two points from matches against Spain, Cape Verde, and Saudi Arabia. Given the proximity of federation elections later this year, the AUF has opted not to pledge a long-term commitment to a permanent successor right away, meaning Forlan’s future will be determined after the interim period.
“The AUF Executive Committee chose Diego. We previously sat down with him in 2022 to bring him into the project, and now he is very enthusiastic,” Alonso commented, as reported by Marca. The former Ballon d’Or winner will oversee Uruguay’s national team schedule for the upcoming international window in September, October, and November, which includes preparation matches ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup qualifying cycle, as well as any friendlies arranged before March 2027.
In addition to leading the senior squad, Forlan will also take on the role of coach for Uruguay’s Under-20 team at the 2027 South American U-20 Championship. While his managerial résumé is limited, his arrival carries considerable weight given his standing in Uruguayan football and his global reputation as a player.
Forlan’s illustrious career includes stints with Manchester United, Villarreal, Atletico Madrid, and Inter, and he is widely regarded as one of the most technically gifted forwards of his generation. He shot to legendary status during Uruguay’s memorable run at the 2010 World Cup, where he netted five goals, earned the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player, and propelled his country to the semi-finals. His contributions helped cement Uruguay’s reputation as a formidable force on the world stage during that era.
Now, Forlan faces the challenge of rebuilding confidence within a talented but fluctuating squad. The objective is to blend experienced veteran presence with a dynamic wave of young talent, aiming to restore La Celeste to the pinnacle of international football. He will be tasked with stabilizing the national team during a transitional period and guiding them toward future competitive milestones as Uruguay prepares for long-term involvement in the evolving landscape of world football.
