Rice, England’s vice-captain, has missed training this week as concerns about illness spreading within the squad grow. He has also been managing hamstring and back pain, but the illness has left him as a doubt for the clash, with Thomas Tuchel reportedly keeping the midfielder away from the main group as a precaution, according to The Telegraph. This development means two of the game’s key players—Rice for England and Odegaard for Norway—may not be fully fit when the quarter-final kicks off on July 11 at 10pm UK time.

The infection has hit hard, with his uncle, Norway’s national team physio Thomas Odegaard, among those most affected. Another member of Norway’s training staff has also been sidelined by the illness, while right back Marcus Holmgren Pedersen, who missed Norway’s victory over Brazil due to illness, has returned to training. As of now, it remains unclear whether Odegaard or Rice will be fit to play this weekend.
England have also received disappointing news regarding Jarrell Quansah, whose red-card suspension has been increased from one game to two. The English FA submitted representations to FIFA, employing arguments similar to those used by the United States, but unlike the ruling that led to a suspended ban, Quansah’s sanction was enhanced to two matches. Bukayo Saka spoke on the situation, calling the ban “incredibly frustrating for us, and for him.” He added: “But it is what it is. We have to deal with it, adapt and pick a team to win.” This week’s headlines center on the fitness and disciplinary hurdles both teams face as they prepare for a high-stakes knockout clash that could alter the trajectory of their World Cup campaigns. England and Norway sit on the cusp of a pivotal match that could hinge on fitness status and tactical adjustments made in light of illnesses sweeping through camps and the boosted suspensions that alter squad selection. As the 11 July showdown approaches, supporters and analysts alike are watching keenly to see which players overcome their ailments and which tactical plans unfold in what promises to be a tightly contested quarter-final.
