Bears keeper Smith wants to be the best in country

Warwickshire wicketkeeper-batter Kai Smith has set his sights on becoming the best keeper in the country, insisting he has made significant, “massive” improvements to his game over the last year. The 21-year-old Dubai-born player made his Bears debut as a teenager in the One-Day Cup in 2022, primarily as a batsman, and earned a two-year rookie deal in 2024. He followed that by hitting his maiden List A century against Worcestershire in the same summer and later signed a fresh two-year contract in 2025. Since Michael Burgess’s retirement, Smith has been a regular in Warwickshire’s red-ball side, posting an average of 33 with the bat while also contributing 33 catches and one stumping across 12 first-class appearances.
Smith boasts a List A average of 37.52 and showcased form in this season’s T20 Blast, hitting a career-best 65 not out as Warwickshire defeated group winners Northamptonshire in their final match. Although the Bears claimed their fifth win in six games, the victory came too late to secure a spot in the quarter-finals after an underwhelming start to the tournament, during which they lost their opening five fixtures.
Speaking to BBC Radio WM, Smith said, “It’s great to finish off the T20 campaign like that. Obviously we didn’t have the greatest start, but it was an awesome, very nice way to finish off, so I really am pleased for that.” In a match that showcased his growing influence, Smith had only faced 38 balls from four appearances before delivering a superb half-century, aligning with Sam Hain’s 48 not out to power Warwickshire past the target of 154 with five wickets to spare and 10 balls to spare.
“When you don’t know when your next chance will come, you want to grab it with both hands, so I was really pleased,” Smith commented. “I just had to stay patient and always stay ready. You never know what can happen, so I’ve kept up behind the scenes with training sessions and other preparations.” He added that maintaining readiness for opportunities is crucial, especially given the possibility of further appearances in white-ball cricket as the One-Day Cup approaches.
In the context of his ongoing development, Smith reflected on the balance between white-ball and red-ball formats. He has been playing fewer first-class matches, with former captain Alex Davies taking the gloves duty in recent Championship fixtures, while Smith continues to refine his skills behind the stumps. He even turned down a chance to play overseas in the winter to focus on keeping at Edgbaston, believing the extra white-ball opportunities would pay dividends in the long run. “Oh, massively, I realised how far I can actually go up the ranks if you become a solid keeper,” he said, highlighting his ambition to be the best keeper in the country.
Smith acknowledged the unique challenges he faces, having grown up in Dubai, where he didn’t experience the same conditions for keeping to a wobbling ball as in the UK. He described how he invested considerable effort to adapt, training hard to improve his technique and consistency behind the stumps. “Growing up in Dubai, I hadn’t faced those conditions, so I had to work really hard on that front,” he explained. He also emphasized the importance of staying committed to his development, stating that he has deliberately chosen to remain in the UK during the winter to focus on his keeping, rather than return home to play overseas.
Looking ahead, Smith is optimistic about more white-ball opportunities in the One-Day Cup and continues to work on strengthening his wicketkeeping fundamentals. He believes the improvements he has made over the past year are a testament to his work ethic and his willingness to evolve as a player. “I’ve got my dreams and aspirations to become the best keeper in the country,” he declared, underscoring that this goal is rooted in a broad vision of his development as a multi-dimensional cricketer capable of contributing in all formats. With his continuing dedication and progress, Kai Smith remains a player to watch as Warwickshire seek to build on this season’s momentum and push for greater success in future campaigns.
