Fifty-one dragon boats took part in the 2026 Milwaukee Dragon Boat Festival on Saturday, July 11, along the southern edge of Henry Maier Festival Park, adjacent to the Summerfest grounds. The dock situated just north of the American Family Amphitheater stayed busy all day as boats, each carrying 21 people, launched and returned for multiple races. Motley Crue, representing the Racine Dragon Boat Club, captured first place in the Diamond Division, the premier category of the competition.
The day’s dragon boat racing marked the festival’s 12th year, blending competition with a broader celebration of Asian culture. Spectators enjoyed traditional dance performances, Chinese folk music, and a variety of food and market stalls, all organized under the umbrella of the Milwaukee Chinese Community Center. The long, 42-foot dragon boats carry a crew of 20 paddlers, plus one drummer and a steersperson who guides the team with precise, coordinated strokes aimed at maximizing speed and synchronization.
In addition to the Milwaukee Chinese Community Center (MCCC), other organizers and sponsors included the Wisconsin Chinese Chamber of Commerce (WCCC) and the National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP). While many teams hailed from major corporations—Kohler, Harley-Davidson, and SC Johnson—there were also private dragon boat clubs competing, reflecting a broad cross-section of the region’s organizations and communities.
The event’s early registration fee was $1,100 per team, roughly $50 per paddler, with a portion of the proceeds supporting the United Way as part of the festival’s nonprofit mission. Behind the scenes, the Milwaukee Dragon Boat races draw volunteers, sponsors, and supporters who contribute to the lively, multi-faceted atmosphere of the festival.
