Michigan State, Gonzaga meet in college basketball tilt at Acrisure Arena

College basketball fans in the Coachella Valley will once again have a reason to celebrate thanks to the Acrisure Series, which continues its tradition with a fresh, high-profile matchup that will unfold at Acrisure Arena. On December 19, two perennial powerhouse programs—Michigan State and Gonzaga—will collide in a marquee showdown that adds a festive, holiday-season flavor to the local hoops calendar. This game is part of the December offshoot of the Acrisure Series, a multi-team event that has become a staple over Thanksgiving weekend at Palm Desert, California. Acrisure Arena, home to the Coachella Valley Firebirds of the AHL and, beginning this fall, the Los Angeles Lakers’ G League affiliate, will serve as the stage for this notable men’s clash.
Adding to the appeal, the MSU-Gonzaga matchup will be part of a distinctive doubleheader, with the women’s programs from both schools meeting prior to the men’s game. Dan Shell, president of Total Sports Consulting and co-tournament director, spoke about the event as a way to elevate the Coachella Valley into a premier destination for college basketball. “We are excited to bring a true marquee doubleheader like Gonzaga and Michigan State to Acrisure Arena this December,” Shell said. “Having both the men’s and women’s programs compete at Acrisure Arena creates an incredible holiday basketball experience and is exactly the type of event we want to continue building in the Coachella Valley.”
The announcement comes on the heels of another notable development at the arena this summer: Duke will be returning to Acrisure Arena on November 21 to face Washington State, kicking off the 2026 Acrisure Series. Tickets for the MSU-Gonzaga doubleheader will go on sale Wednesday, July 15, and a single ticket will grant access to both the men’s and women’s games, making it an efficient and attractive option for fans hoping to catch both teams in action.
On the court, both Michigan State and Gonzaga figure to carry strong NCAA Tournament pedigrees into the 2026 season. The Spartans and Bulldogs currently boast two of the longest active streaks in college basketball, underscoring the durability and consistency of their programs. Michigan State has appeared in 28 consecutive NCAA Tournaments under coach Tom Izzo, while Gonzaga has made 27 straight appearances under Mark Few. Those streaks are a testament to the sustained excellence that both programs have cultivated over the years and bode well for a dynamic, high-stakes contest when they meet in Palm Springs.
This year marks a full-circle moment for the Spartans, who already hold a special place in Acrisure Arena’s history. The arena opened in 2022 with an 11,000-seat capacity, and its inaugural college basketball game took place in November 2023 when Michigan State faced Arizona. “We’re very excited about the opportunity to return to Palm Springs and play at Acrisure Arena,” said Michigan State coach Tom Izzo in a statement provided for the event. “We played the first college basketball game there a few years back, and it was a great environment and a great arena. Getting the chance to play against a terrific program in Gonzaga, led by one of my great friends in college basketball, Mark Few, made this an easy game to put on our schedule. Michigan State has a great alumni presence in Southern California, and I know our West Coast Spartans will bring a strong following.”
As the college basketball landscape looks ahead to the 2026 season, the MSU-Gonzaga showdown in the Coachella Valley promises to be more than just a game. It’s positioned as a standout event within a broader plan to establish Acrisure Arena as a recurring hub for top-tier college hoops, a destination where fans can savor competitive matchups, celebrate the holiday season, and enjoy a unique doubleheader experience that blends men’s and women’s basketball in a single, memorable outing.
