Lioness Beth Mead has been awarded an honorary degree by her former university, which hailed her as a genuine role model for championing women’s sport. The recognition came from Teesside University, where Mead, a native of Hinderwell near Whitby, was conferred with an Honorary Doctor of Science.
Since her 2016 graduation, Mead has been a central figure in the England squad that captured two European Championships, while also establishing a scholarship in her name to support aspiring female footballers who wish to study while continuing to play. She described the accolade as “quite surreal,” though she admitted she was both proud and honoured to receive it.
Mead earned a BA (hons) in sports development from Teesside University and later partnered with the institution to create the Beth Mead Scholarship. The scholarship mirrors her commitment to helping the next generation of female players. Her achievements with the Lionesses, including two Euros triumphs, have been complemented by her continued ties to Teesside University. She has recalled how the university supported her generously during the final year of her degree when she turned professional with Sunderland.
“I wanted to be able to assist young girls who aspire to become the next Beth Mead or the next Lioness, in whatever capacity I could,” she has stated, describing the chance to give back as a privilege.
Mead’s impact extends beyond the pitch. In 2022 she became the first female footballer to be named BBC Sports Personality of the Year, a prestigious honour that highlighted her influence on the sport. She has also been recognised with an MBE for services to sport. The vice-chancellor and chief executive of Teesside University, Professor Paul Croney, paid tribute to Mead, calling her “an inspiration to young girls and women in the entire field of sport and football.” He added that she embodies the idea that students can study hard and still go on to achieve extraordinary things.
Mead herself has emphasized the importance of giving back. She has repeatedly noted how the university’s support during her final year—when she transitioned into professional football—helped shape her career and encouraged her to use her platform to empower others.
The university’s sponsorships and partnerships continue to strengthen the ties between Teesside and its successful alumni, including Mead, who has become a symbol of perseverance and achievement for female athletes. Her journey—from student to world-class footballer and now honorary degree recipient—serves as a compelling testament to the value of higher education in shaping professional athletes who aspire to influence sport and society.
