A to Z Sports ranks the top 10 college football running backs heading into the 2026 season, continuing a debate that never seems to get old. With the 2026 college football season less than two months away, the offseason has become a period of projection, evaluation, and celebration of the sport’s best returning talent as fall camps approach. A to Z Sports gathered a panel of seven college football analysts to rate the top 10 running backs in the nation for the upcoming year. The emphasis is on the best overall players at the position in college football, not solely on NFL Draft potential. Each analyst submitted individual rankings from 1 through 10, and those rankings were averaged to produce a consensus list that reflects a broad expert view.
In addition to the top 10, the panel included honorable mentions for players who received at least one vote but did not crack the top 10. The resulting list highlighted several standout running backs who earned recognition across the board and helped shape the year’s early discussions about who will be the chiefs of the backfield in 2026.
Lacy began his college career at Missouri before transferring to Ole Miss, where he emerged as a star in Lane Kiffin and Charlie Weis Jr.’s offense. With a coaching transition from Kiffin to a new head coach and a full turnover on the offensive staff, expectations are that Lacy will see even more touches in 2026. He’s among the most explosive runners in college football, capable of turning plays into home runs with regularity. In addition to his rushing ability, Lacy can catch the football, making him a dual threat that should anchor Ole Miss’s offense in both the run and passing games as the 2026 season approaches.
Hardy has a dynamic background, beginning with a standout freshman season at Louisiana-Monroe before transferring to Missouri, where he blossomed into a true star in the SEC. Standing 5-foot-10 and around 210 pounds, Hardy exhibits a low center of gravity and exceptional physicality, running through contact with one of the best balances you’ll see. He isn’t a flashy showrunner like some peers, but his efficiency and reliability make him incredibly tough to tackle. Missouri has leaned heavily on the ground game under head coach Eli Drinkwitz, and there’s little reason to doubt Hardy can deliver another outstanding year, provided he returns to full health after offseason injuries.
When evaluating the best running back in the national landscape, it isn’t simply about raw stat totals. Some players have easier pathways to accumulate statistics, while others must grind harder for every yard. Jadan Baugh represents the complete package in this regard. He demonstrates excellent vision in zone schemes as well as the ability to find creases in the open field to generate big plays. Baugh also possesses the frame to run through and over defenders, routinely proving his physicality. He has the versatility to catch passes out of the backfield and to pass protect at a high level, making him a valuable all-around contributor. While his top-end long speed may not be the fastest in the group, his general game-breaking ability and well-rounded impact make him a strong contender in the 2026 running back rankings.
