Referee dies aged 38 after being dropped from FIFA World Cup following arrest

Referee Rob Dieperink has died at the age of 38, plunging the football world into shock. The Dutch official, who had recently faced removal from officiating duties at this summer’s FIFA World Cup and was dropped from the roster of referees, was detained in April by the Metropolitan Police amid allegations of sexual assault involving an underage boy in London. The case later did not proceed, with authorities stating that the evidential threshold had not been met and that no further action would be taken.
Dutch authorities are now investigating Dieperink’s death, and the cause has not yet been determined. The Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) has expressed that it is shocked and deeply saddened by the news of Dieperink’s passing. In a formal statement reported by The Mirror, the KNVB offered condolences and highlighted Dieperink’s significant value to refereeing: “We are shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of referee Rob Dieperink. With Rob, the refereeing community loses a highly valued referee with international experience, but above all, a fine and dedicated colleague. Our thoughts go out to his family, friends, and everyone who held him dear. We wish them much strength and support in coping with this great loss.”
Dieperink, 38, had been selected to participate in the 2026 World Cup as part of the Netherlands’ officiating team, serving in the role of video assistant referee (VAR) alongside Danny Makkelie. However, after news of his arrest in connection with the England incident emerged, FIFA removed him from his duties, and the governing bodies proceeded accordingly.
The incident in question reportedly occurred after Crystal Palace defeated ACF Fiorentina 3-0 in a match held in London. Dieperink was taken into custody on suspicion of sexually assaulting a teenage boy at a hotel in the capital. The Metropolitan Police later confirmed to The Athletic in May that the case had been dropped because the evidential threshold had not been met, and no further action would be pursued.
Throughout the period of inquiry, the KNVB supported Dieperink as a match official and stood by him. In a separate statement to Dutch paper De Telegraaf, Dieperink himself voiced disappointment with FIFA’s decision not to appoint him for the World Cup, expressing his sorrow at the outcome but emphasizing his cooperation with authorities. He had stated that he fully cooperated with the police investigation, and that he had been completely open with FIFA, UEFA, and the KNVB. He maintained that the allegations were refuted and that the case was dismissed within two weeks after a thorough police investigation.
The KNVB has reiterated its commitment to a safe and honest football culture at all levels and to taking reports of unwanted behavior seriously. The association also underscored the importance of allowing individuals to tell their side of the story and to avoid premature judgments. The organization stated that Dutch referees should exemplify unquestionable behavior while recognizing the need for due process and fair treatment in all circumstances.
Dieperink’s death has prompted an outpouring of condolences from colleagues, players, and fans who remember him as a dedicated official with international experience. In the wake of his passing, tributes have emphasized his contributions to the sport and the professional standards he upheld on the field. The football community continues to mourn the loss of a referee who was poised to contribute on the world stage in future competitions, including the World Cup, and who had previously demonstrated a commitment to the integrity of the game.
As investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death proceed, the football world reflects on Dieperink’s career and the broader implications for officiating in the sport. His passing raises questions about the pressures faced by referees at the highest levels and the support systems in place for officials dealing with personal and legal challenges during their careers. The KNVB and international bodies may revisit protocols related to safeguarding, due process, and the welfare of referees, ensuring that the standards of conduct are balanced with fair treatment and transparent communication in times of controversy.
