Labaron Philon Jr. is making an impressive early impression with the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA Summer League, and head coach Nick Nurse envisions the rookie playing a significant part for the team next season. In Las Vegas, Philon has posted averages of 21 points, 6.5 assists, three rebounds and one steal per game, while shooting 40 percent from three-point range. He helped the Sixers improve to 2-0 on Saturday by contributing 24 points, six assists and three rebounds across 34 minutes in a victory over the Indiana Pacers.
The 22nd pick in the draft has quickly emerged as one of the standout first-year players in the desert, dazzling observers with his scoring ability, precise passing and finishing at the rim. Philon conveyed satisfaction with his performances through the first two games in Sixers colors. “I’m a very confident player, I would say,” Philon told Ky Carlin of Sixers Wire. “Being able to get into the lane, spread out the floor, drive and kick, and knock down some open threes while also competing on the other end of the floor— I feel like that’s an important element as well.”
During his college career at Alabama, Philon earned third-team All-American honors after averaging 22 points, five assists, three-and-a-half rebounds and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 39.9 percent from beyond the arc. His 725 total points that season stood as the third-most in program history for a single year.
At 20 years old, Philon is projected to be a key reserve ballhandler behind the lineup’s primary playmakers, including Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe and Jaylen Brown. While the Summer League sample remains small, Philon has demonstrated tremendous confidence and a solid grasp of how the Sixers want to play. Nurse and the Sixers have been impressed by what they’ve seen so far and believe it can translate to meaningful contributions next season.
“Nurse has been clear: my thoughts today, and nothing has changed up to this point, is that I’m going to play him,” the coach said. “I’m going to go in there, and he’s in the rotation until something changes. I believe he has the confidence to seize the moment and make the most of the opportunity.” Nurse’s remarks underscore the organization’s optimism about Philon’s potential role as a reliable, energetic contributor off the bench and perhaps beyond.
The Sixers’ early-season optimism surrounding Philon isn’t just about holiday-style hype; it’s rooted in a tangible track record from college and a standout start to summer action that hints at a possible bigger imprint in the rotation next year. If Philon maintains or even accelerates his current level of play, he could become a trusted second-unit ballhandler who can create, distribute and convert at a high rate, while also providing defensible versatility in multiple backcourt and wing lineups.
As the summer league continues, Philon will have more opportunities to showcase his ability to navigate defenses, read passing lanes and leverage his pace to push the pace in transition. The combination of his confidence, college production and early summer success has created a narrative in which Nurse’s early-season plans for Philon could evolve into a meaningful, long-term role as the Sixers explore a balanced combination of veterans and developing youth. The road ahead will determine how large a part Philon ultimately secures, but the current trajectory suggests a promising pathway for the young guard to establish himself as a reliable option in Philadelphia’s backcourt next season.
