With a win to cap off a sweep against the Kansas City Royals on Sunday, the Baltimore Orioles finally completed a four-game win streak for the first time this season, heading into the All-Star break with the momentum they have been searching for. However, Sunday’s win was soured in the seventh inning. With a six-run lead, Orioles infielder Blaze Alexander came up to the plate against the Royals’ Lucas Erceg and was drilled with a 95.5 mph fastball on his left wrist.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe injury news to come out of it was a total gut-punch. After the game, Orioles manager Craig Albernaz announced that Alexander suffered a non-displaced fracture in his left hand, which will sideline him for a decent period of time.Visibly frustrated with the pitch, Alexander immediately jawed at Erceg upon being hit and sparked the benches to clear. Alexander seemed to take exception to Erceg’s quick-pitch that ran away from him.Alexander took further frustration to the matter on Monday, when he replied to Vinnie Pasquantino’s comments postgame, when he credited him for “feeling good about himself” for taking exception to the hit by pitch.“Weird take.. Never thought it was intentional but the 2 quick pitches to try and catch me off guard led to me now missing games. Thanks for the compliments tho Big Foot,” Alexander wrote on X.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe Orioles have yet to announce a timeline for Alexander’s absence, but a broken hand normally takes a couple months to heal. He is currently scheduled to meet with a doctor during the All-Star break.Alexander’s absence is a huge blow to the Orioles’ lineup. In what wound up being his last game for a while because of the injury, he reached base four times in Baltimore’s sound victory. The 27-year-old has blossomed into an everyday utility role and has become one of the Orioles’ hottest bats. This season, he has posted a .312 batting average with an .807 OPS, which will give Baltimore a tough time to replace such a productive bat in the middle of the order. It is no secret that Alexander’s injury is such a brutal blow for the Orioles, especially as they ramp up the competition ahead of the trade deadline in early August, with hopes to buy and compete for a Wild Card spot.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementPete Alonso put things simple when acknowledging the loss of Alexander’s production going forward.“Losing Blaze, it’s really frustrating,” Alonso said. “We’ve got to pick him up. We’ve got to do it for him.”
