San Francisco Giants ace Logan Webb finished the first half focused less on individual accomplishments and more on where the club can go over the next few months of the season.Following Sunday’s 3-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies, Webb spoke about the team’s young starting pitchers, his likely absence from the All-Star Game, and the mindset he believes the Giants must adopt after the break.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementWebb indicated he is not expected to pitch in Tuesday’s All-Star Game, explaining that the decision was made after considering his workload throughout the season.”When we all talked, and this wasn’t just my decision, it was kind of a team decision, we thought it’d be the best option to not throw in the game,” Webb said, according to NBC Sports Bay Area & California. The right-hander noted that he pitched for Team USA during the World Baseball Classic earlier this year before missing roughly a month because of injury, making additional rest a priority.”I did pitch in the WBC. I was hurt for a month. Just have a little bit of a break and come back strong,” Webb said.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAlthough Webb admitted the situation could still become a game-time decision depending on the National League pitching staff, his focus remains on preparing for the Giants’ first series after the break.Much of Webb’s praise centered on rookie starter Trevor McDonald, who delivered another impressive outing against Colorado.”It was awesome,” Webb said. “Trevor’s had a couple of really good games.”Webb believes confidence is the biggest hurdle for young pitchers adjusting to the major-leagues, comparing McDonald and Landen Roupp’s development to his own early career struggles.Video courtesy of NBC Sports Bay AreaAdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement”It takes time. Not every guy comes up and is a superstar from the get-go,” Webb said. “I was not very good in my first year and a half.”He added that strong outings against established major-league hitters can accelerate a young pitcher’s growth and confidence.Looking ahead to the second half, Webb acknowledged the Giants have underperformed but stressed there is still time to change the season’s trajectory.”We haven’t put ourselves in a good position,” Webb said. “We all have to take a step back, look in the mirror and decide what we want to be.”AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementWebb referenced members of Atlanta’s improbable 2021 World Series run after trailing significantly in the standings, noting that baseball seasons can change quickly.”There’s still a ton of baseball left,” Webb said.As for his own goals, Webb kept them simple.”Every time I pitch, put the team in a position to win,” Webb said. “Hopefully turn this thing around.”Don’t miss out on our ROUNDTABLE community and the latest news! It’s completely free to join.
