The widely anticipated QB competition is close to continuing this month at Minnesota Vikings training camp. The decision hasn’t been made between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy. Head coach Kevin O’Connell has been consistent with the message of a true competition. However, the money is coming in on Murray as the starter for the Vikings. It’s an educated guess at this point, but it’s hard to envision the veteran not taking the job in camp. Bringing in Murray for a one-year audition for the Vikings and the NFL is a clear sign of the direction the organization is leaning. McCarthy would have to be extraordinary in camp and the preseason to beat out Murray. Murray hasn’t exactly put himself head and shoulders ahead of McCarthy, but he is ahead.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementNFL.com selected one player from each Week 1 matchup that will be the top draw, and to nobody’s surprise, Murray was selected in the Green Bay vs Minnesota meeting.Kyler Murray, QB. Minnesota VikingsDisclaimer: We don’t actually know that this will be Murray’s Minnesota debut, as he still has to beat outJ.J. McCarthy for the job in an ongoing QB competition. But the former first overall pick appears to have the inside track, with experience and a Pro Bowl résumé that McCarthy does not have. A revitalized Murray, with the input of head coach Kevin O’Connell and the talents of Justin Jefferson, could be one of the more exciting storylines of the season. He and the Vikings will start with a crucial divisional showdown against the Packers. The Vikings are as intriguing as it gets. O’Connell has gotten the most out of each quarterback, McCarthy aside, from any starting QB during his time as Vikings head coach. The offense just needs a baseline and consistent play to help the team win many games. Unfortunately, Murray has struggled to maintain consistency since being selected with the first overall pick by Arizona.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe integration of Murray’s skillset and O’Connell’s system is fascinating. The layups in the passing game will be there, but the running game will be formidable with Murray’s legs and the Vikings offensive line.
