The Oklahoma Sooners are less than a month away from the beginning of fall camp, as the 2026 season is inching closer in Norman. With SEC Media Days on tap next week, it won’t be long after that until OU is back on campus and back in pads for camp season ahead of Week 1 in early September. While OU’s roster has been mostly set since the transfer portal madness of this winter died down, and spring ball gave us a lot to talk about in March and April, there are still a few position battles worth keeping an eye on as we approach fall ball. There are still some depth chart questions at a lot of positions, but we’ll focus on four specific battles that are front and center between now and Game 1 against UTEP. Some positions that didn’t make the cut, but are still something we’ll be watching are:AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementRunning back. Xavier Robinson and Tory Blaylock are both back to take most of the carries, but how does the rest of the depth chart shake out behind them with Lloyd Avant, Jonathan Hatton Jr., and DeZephen Walker all fighting to get more snaps?Wide receiver. The starting trio of Isaiah Sategna III, Trell Harris, and Parker Livingstone looks set, but there are a lot of intriguing players behind them who will push for playing time. Where do players like Jer’Michael Carter, Ivan Carreon, Jacob Jordan, Mackenzie Alleyne, Manny Choice, Elijah Thomas, Jayden Petit, and Jahsiear Rogers fit in?The right side of the offensive line. OU’s lineup looks set on the left side, with Michael Fasusi at tackle and Eddy Pierre-Louis at guard, and the Sooners feel great about Jake Maikkula at center. However, there could be spots on the right side up for grabs. With Ryan Fodje able to play guard or tackle, will he play on the inside next to E’Marion Harris, or on the outside next to Heath Ozaeta? Or, could Ozaeta and Harris win the two spots? Additionally, how much will OU need players like Caleb Nitta and Peyton Joseph? We may not know until the season is already underway. The cheetah rotation. Reggie Powers III looks ready to step into the spotlight, but what else does OU have at cheetah? With the Taylor Heim injury, we’ll see more of both Jeremiah Newcombe and Cole Sullivan at this spot, but the Sooners aren’t as deep defensively as they were last year. If there are injuries at inside linebacker, cornerback, or safety, it could change what the cheetah position looks like.Safety depth. OU really likes the starting duo of Peyton Bowen and Michael Boganowski, but aside from Omarion Robinson, the Sooners are really thin at the safety spot. Powers can move back from cheetah if depth becomes an issue, or Oklahoma might be counting on true freshman Niko Jandreau faster than expected.Kick returner. While Sategna is a star at punt returner, OU got almost nothing in the kickoff return game last year. They’d like to change that this year, and Avant is likely the guy who will get the first crack at it. Blaylock could also factor in here, as well as Rogers.
