Only a month and a half until college football kicks off! With that, we are going to start taking a deeper dive into each Mountain West and PAC 12 squad. A big part of a team’s success is the head coach’s ability to rally his troops. Over the next two weeks, we are going to take a look at each head coach from the Mountain West and the PAC 12 and rank them on their ability to build a winning team this season and into the future. This week, we are going to kick off our series by taking a look at the Good, Bad, and Ugly of Mountain West head coaches.Jason Eck (New Mexico)AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementFive years from now we will look at this list and say Jason Eck is the best head coach on here. I doubt he will still be the head coach of the Lobos, but there is no denying what he did in his first year as an FBS head coach was extremely impressive. Eck took the New Mexico head coaching position after a successful stint at the University of Idaho. He has built a reputation for turning around struggling programs. His infectious personality and love for the game has made him one of the most likable coaches in college football.Dan Mullen (UNLV)Mullen has the most impressive resume of any coach on this list. He found success in the SEC as the head coach of Mississippi State and Florida. While his tenure in Gainesville may have ended on a sour note, there is no denying that the man knows how to coach football. I was a bit skeptical of the hire at first; I wasn’t sure how Mullen’s experience in the South would translate to coaching a team in the West. But Mullen has UNLV in a prime position to capture their first Mountain West title.Tim Polasek (North Dakota State)AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement26-3 and a national championship. Polasek’s resume as the head coach of the Bison is nothing short of astonishing. He now has the difficult task of taking an FCS powerhouse and transitioning the program to the FBS ranks. There will be bumps in the road, but North Dakota State has a manageable schedule and are a lock to be playing in their first bowl game when December rolls around. Polasek will be a popular name when job openings start popping up at the end of the season.Troy Calhoun (Air Force)The most tenured coach in the Mountain West, Calhoun has been leading the Falcons since 2007 and has had significant success in his time in Colorado Springs. I struggled with where to place Calhoun; the last few seasons have seen Air Force take a step in the wrong direction and the current world of college football is making it much harder for the service academies to be successful. But I believe Calhoun has the ability to get this program back on track and I would be shocked if the Falcons aren’t playing in a bowl game at the end of the season.Jeff Choate (Nevada)AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe former Montana State head coach has had a rough road during his short tenure in Reno. Choate’s Wolf Pack squad went winless in the Mountain Wes
