MLB’s All-Star event is still far and away the best in sports

In earlier times America would have enjoyed a one of the best pitching performances by a team in the All-Star Game and possibly enjoyed just how many electric arms now populate the sport. We might have remembered one extra day into the past when Jordan Walker and Kyle Schwarber combined to put on a thrilling Home Run Derby. But those days are over, folks. The charge of today is to worry about things that aren’t going to happen.Buster Olney knows his stuff so when he says on “Get Up” that the Midsummer Classic is in a fragile state and there’s concern within the sport that so many players are opting out of the All-Star Game, I believe him. He cites the fact that a third of the stands at Citizens Bank Park had cleared out by the eighth inning of last night’s game as evidence.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementPerhaps this is my own stupidity or naivety speaking, but I will sleep like a baby when it comes to my MLB All-Star Game stock. Remembering the high baseball was on not 36 hours ago helps a lot. Going through the list of big names Olney lists that did not participate and realizing most of them are injured helps too. Wondering if a 33 percent reduction in crowd between first pitch and the penultimate inning well past 10:40 p.m. local time is all that significant allows some blissful ignorance. Then there’s the crazy notion that a lot of the people in the stadium at every All-Star Game are part of the corporate machine and don’t really care and want to beat traffic.Perceived problems can be turned into bright spots. Okay, so some of the biggest names in the sport weren’t available to play. That opened the door for an endless stream of hurlers throwing nasty stuff. Up and coming prospects got to show out on the biggest available stage. And it’s not like the old days when the All-Star Game served as the only chance to see guys who played in other markets. Anyone interested enough to pay for a subscription can watch Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani almost every night. Lord know they’ll have enough games available on linear television either. So I’m holding stock. MLB can surely figure out how to make their two-night advertisement for their sport a success. The rosters will never, ever atrophy to the level we’ve seen in the NBA. Heck, the Pro Bowl died and they play flag football now instead. Raise your hand if you know the format for the NHL All-Star Game.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThings are going to be just fine to the point we forget we even had this brief moment of panic a year from now. Or two days from now.— Enjoy free coverage of the top news & trending stories on The Big Lead —
