Pittsburgh Steelers fans have spent much of the offseason discussing the franchise’s impressive 2023 draft class, but the organization’s 2024 haul could ultimately prove just as important. While first-round tackle Troy Fautanu and center Zach Frazier have already established themselves as key pieces, Pittsburgh’s long-term vision extends beyond individual players. According to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo, the Steelers are trying to build an offensive line that can anchor the franchise for years to come.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement”They’ve laid the foundation,” Fittipaldo said on the “North Shore Drive” podcast. “They want that to be their offensive line in the future. And I think getting two, maybe three of those guys under long-term contracts is favorable.”That philosophy mirrors one of the Steelers’ most successful roster-building stretches under former general manager Kevin Colbert, when the team drafted Maurkice Pouncey, Marcus Gilbert, and David DeCastro in consecutive years to form the backbone of its offensive front.”You go back and look at what they did when they had a similar drafting strategy under Kevin Colbert,” Fittipaldo said. “Pouncey came in 2010, Marcus Gilbert came in ’11, and David DeCastro in 2012.”The hope, he said, is that Omar Khan’s current group can follow a similar trajectory.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement”If they can get that kind of longevity out of those guys, eventually some Pro Bowls, really solid play, I think that’s the direction that Omar Khan is aiming for.”There is still work to do before those comparisons become reality. Fittipaldo acknowledged Pittsburgh’s young line has shown promise but hasn’t yet reached the level needed to justify lofty expectations.”Honestly, we’ve seen kind of baby steps from the offensive line on the whole,” he said. “I think Fautanu and Frazier have been better than the mean, but on the whole, we got to see that offensive line play a lot better this year than they did last year.”If Pittsburgh’s 2024 draft class develops as expected, however, the conversation around the Steelers’ future may soon begin with the offensive line instead of the defense. This article originally appeared on Steelers Wire: Omar Khan’s biggest Steelers gamble is starting to come into focus
