A reunion between the Detroit Red Wings and forward Patrick Kane seemed very likely at the end of the 2025-26 season. Now? It’s looking like a long shot.Former Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks legend Chris Chelios appeared on the “Mully and Haugh Show” on Chicago’s The Score radio station on Wednesday, July 15, saying that the free agent Kane will choose between two teams, neither of which is the Red Wings.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement”I’m not goingto lie to you guys, it’s down to Buffalo and Chicago. I know that, obviously, because I spoke to him,” Chelios said.Kane is a native of Buffalo and spent his first 16 NHL seasons in Chicago, where he won three Stanley Cups and a Hart trophy in the 2015-16 season. Kane joined the Red Wings in the 2023-24 season registering 57 goals in the last three campaigns, breaking the NHL record for career points by a U.S-born player in January. There initially seemed to be mutual interest in a reunion between the Red Wings and Kane at the end of the season, with Kane saying, “I’d love to be part of the solution that helps us get over the hump, for sure.”But according to Chelios, Kane is making the “tough decision” of whether to go home or play where his career started, though Chelios seems to be rooting for a reunion with Chicago.”He’s so beloved in Chicago, so I’m hoping he leans [there],” he said. “I think he’s going to make his decision pretty quick now. It’s time. But it’s a tough decision, for sure.”AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe last word the Red Wings had on Kane came from former GM Steve Yzerman, who in an end-of-season news conference said the team would love to have Kane back. Now that Yzerman is out of the big chair, however, Kane may be next for the exits.Need to catch up on the news during your lunch break?
