Pirates Trade Pitch Brings in Perfect Replacement for Former No. 1 Pick

The draft and All-Star Game are behind us, meaning the Pittsburgh Pirates are now in a position to go out and get better before Major League Baseball’s trade deadline. This is a very exciting time for the Pirates if they do what’s needed, though as I’ve continued to say, I have my fair share of questions about whether they’ll actually go out and make the right moves. Not to say that the Pirates have to go out and land a superstar or even an All-Star, but there are some players out there for the Pirates to pursue who I think would be perfect options.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe only question for the Pirates is whether they’re willing to move on from the necessary assets to get said players.Teams looking to get better at this year’s deadline will likely be in the mix to add some pitching. The Pirates could be one of those teams, especially in the bullpen. However, there’s no debate that Pittsburgh’s biggest need right now is catcher, which is why the latest trade proposal should be of interest to all.Pirates get: C Adley RutschmanOrioles get: LHP Hunter Barco, OF Jhostynxon García, INF Yordany De Los Santos“Last season, Pittsburgh simply couldn’t muster the offensive production to support Paul Skenes and a dominant pitching staff. The narrative has flipped in 2026. The lineup is new and improved, but the rotation has underperformed and the bullpen is a hot mess. Pittsburgh should look for arms at the deadline first and foremost, but catcher remains the one glaring weak point in their lineup.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement“The Bucs can double down on their newfound ability to out-slug opponents with Rutschman, whose brilliance calling games behind home plate could help the pitching, in theory. Pittsburgh dolled out more cash than usual this past free agency cycle. Konnor Griffin got his big-money extension before he touched the majors. Perhaps Pittsburgh can even talk itself into competing for Rutschman’s services once he reaches free agency,” Christopher Kline wrote.I know there have been a lot of rumors that Rutschman could be traded, and I don’t think it’s impossible. However, I still don’t really understand why the Baltimore Orioles would do so right now.Baltimore, even if it has been struggling a bit compared to what was expected over the past two seasons, still has a boatload of young talent, and Rutschman is one of those guys. I don’t really love the idea of giving up a guy who many considered to be the best catcher in baseball just a few seasons ago after a few months of struggling.
