Jim Corrigall, one of the greatest players in both Kent State and Canadian football history, has died at the age of 80.KSU announced Corrigall’s passing Monday on social media mourning him as someone who “embodied what it means to be a Golden Flash both as a player and a coach.” An exact cause of death has not been made public.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement”Our thoughts are with his family, friends, teammates, and all who had the privilege of knowing him,” the university’s football team wrote.Corrigall was born and raised in Barrie, Ontario, but came to Ohio to pursue his dream on the collegiate gridiron. A defensive tackle before moving to linebacker, he was a three-time first-team All-Mid-American Conference selection, and during his senior year in 1969 earned first-team All-America honors from the Newspaper Enterprise Association. He set Kent State records for tackles in a game and a career (both marks have since been broken), and his No. 79 was the first to be retired in program history.Though he was chosen in the second round of the NFL draft by the St. Louis Cardinals, Corrigall chose to go professional in his native Canada, where he spent his entire 12-year career with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League. During those 12 years, he was a four-time All-Canada selection and was named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 1975.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAfter his playing days ended, Corrigall went into coaching and in 1994 returned to Kent to lead the Flashes as head coach. He was fired after posting an 8-35-1 record in three seasons, although his 3-8 mark in 1997 was actually KSU’s best in nine years up to that point.Outside of Kent, Corrigall served as an assistant coach at various high schools and colleges across Northeast Ohio. He was inducted into Kent State’s Varsity K Hall of Fame in 1979, the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1990, and was honored as an “All-Time Argo” in 1997.Funeral arrangements for Corrigall have not been announced.
