South Dakota United Spirit to play in US Club Soccer National Cup July 20-24

   ​Five Watertown soccer players are getting ready to perform on a national stage.Defenders Arianna Snyder and Elizabeth Schaeffer, forward Brooklynn Randall and midfielders Berkley Fligge and Sophia Wishard are set to play for the South Dakota United Spirit in the 16-and-under Premier Girls Division July 20-24 in the United States Club Soccer’s National Cup in Denver, CO.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementSnyder and Schaffer are going to be juniors and Randall, Fligge and Wishard each sophomores this fall. They all played for Watertown High School’s varsity and/or junior varsity teams last fall.SDU Spirit head coach Chris Pollreisz and assistant Mike Snyder are also from Watertown.Five Watertown soccer players are members of the South Dakota United Spirit 16-and-under soccer team that has qualified to compete n the U.S. Club National Cup July 20-24 in Denver, Co. Watertown players include Berkley Fligge (second from left in front row), Brooklynn Randall (third from left in front), Sophia Wishard (fourth from left in front), Elizabeth Schaeffer (second from left in back) and Arianna Snyder (fourth from right in back row). Head coach Chris Pollreisz (back left) and assistant Mike Snyder (back right) are also from Watertown. The team includes players from South Dakota, North Dakota and Montana.The SDU Spirit team is a select team of players recruited to compete at a national level and includes players from North Dakota, Montana and South Dakota.Pollreisz said the team practices one weekend a month from October through June and has been focused over the past year on attending college showcases around the Midwest, which provide opportunities for college recruitment.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe team competed in the Las Vegas Players Showcase and went 3-1 in the event, allowing only one goal.The SDU Spirit qualified for nationals by going 5-0 to win the U16 Premier 1 championship June 18-22 in the US Club Soccer Midwest Regionals at Chicago, Ill.The Spirit defeated the Fusion Soccer Club of Plymouth, MN 3-0; United FC Rush of Albertville, MN 4-0 and the Hoosier Futbol Club of Noblesville, IN 2-1 in the region before beating the Palatine (IL) Celtic Soccer Club 1-0 in the semifinals and the Hoosier Futbol Club again 1-0 in the championship.”The Midwest Regionals are considered one of the most challenging to win,” Pollreisz said. “The national champion has come out of this region two of the last three years.”AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement20 FAVORITES WATERTOWN GIRLS SOCCER: Glabs, Campbells, Ebsens, Feiningers, Pickrels & Haucks left their mark on Watertown girls soccerThe SDU Spirit is one of six teams competing in the U16 Girls Premier Division at nationals with other teams hailing from Washington, California, Virginia, Georgia and Iowa.The team’s schedule of games includes:Monday, July 20 — vs. Arlington (VA) Soccer Association at 1:30 p.m. Central.Tuesday, July 21 — vs. Athens (GA) United at 1:30 p.m. Central.Wednesday
