Clutch or Crutch? Deciphering Cowboys’ strategy with Brandon Aubrey

A narrative has formed insinuating that Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer frequently bypasses fourth-down conversion attempts in favor of kicker Brandon Aubrey. As the saying in Dallas goes, “All the Cowboys have to do is reach midfield to be in field goal range.” The threat forces opponents to spend time strategizing against those types of situations, making Aubrey one of the most dangerous weapons in the league.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThree seasons in, Aubrey is 112 of 127, leading to an 88.2% field goal percentage – good for fifth-best all-time among qualifying kickers. He is 35-of-44 on field goals over 50 yards, which comes out to 79.5% — good for third-best all-time (minimum 25 attempts). When narrowed down to 60+ yard attempts, he is 6-of-9, dropping that percentage down to 66.7% — good for second-best of all-time, behind only former Cowboys kicker Brett Maher, who was a perfect four-of-four from that distance — all with Dallas. Aubrey is the only player in NFL history with six kicks made from 60+ yards or beyond. You can now see why Schottenheimer might have trouble deciding whether to go for it on fourth down or take the three points.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementComparative to the rest of the league, Schotty went for it on fourth down 35 times in his rookie season, tied for the fourth-most attempts alongside Tennessee. That is more than the Lions (31), whose head coach, Dan Campbell, has built a reputation of being a gambler by going for it even in outlandish situations.Dallas sits just six attempts shy of the league-leading Jets, who went for it 41 times last season. Simply put, Aubrey isn’t as much of a crutch as some may perceive.Amazingly, Aubrey has never attempted a kick of 19-yards or shorter in the NFL. Accounting the ten yards for the end zone and the seven yards behind the line of scrimmage added to each kick, that means the Cowboys have never kicked a field goal from inside the two-yard line in Aubrey’s career. He is a perfect 23-of-23 of kicks between 20 and 29 yards meaning the drive stalled between the three- and 12-yard lines. In his final two seasons, former head coach Mike McCarthy opted to kick from that distance 13 times. As for Schottenheimer, he decided to kick from that distance 10 times in 2025 alone — crutch.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementHe is 26-of-30 from 30 to 39 yards, a distance which puts the ball between the 13- and 22-yard lines. Along the same lines, McCarthy kicked it 25 times with Aubrey, while Schotty opted to kick just five times in 2025 from that distance — aggressive.Aubrey is 28-of-30 from 40 to 49 yards — those attempts come from a drive ending between the 23- and 32-yard lines. Under McCarthy, Aubrey kicked it from that distance 20 times in two seasons while Schottenheimer opted to kick 10 times — push.Schotty appears to be more aggressive than his predecessor the closer he gets to the end zone, while the law of averages seems to even ou
