FC Internazionale Milano and the entire Inter family join in mourning the passing of Osvaldo Bagnoli and, in remembering him, extend their deepest condolences to his family. Humble, respectful, and genuine: Osvaldo Bagnoli was an authentic man who embodied Milan and his Bovisa neighbourhood, where he was born on 3 July 1935 and where he grew up. A man of considerable intelligence, Bagnoli spent 18 years as a footballer before turning to coaching, the role by which he became widely known and appreciated. A thoughtful, methodical, and meticulous manager, Bagnoli was famous for writing down every useful note for training sessions and matches in a notebook—his faithful “quadernètt,” as he called it.
His crowning achievement as a coach came with the Scudetto he won with Hellas Verona in the 1984/85 season, during a nine-year spell in charge of the club. After two seasons at Genoa, 1992 brought Inter into his story: a Milanese coach entrusted with reviving the Nerazzurri through hard work and dedication. Bagnoli built a team around Ruben Sosa and came tantalisingly close to an extraordinary feat, nearly overturning an 11-point deficit to AC Milan (two points for a win at the time). His second season at Inter was not as successful, and his Inter adventure concluded in February 1994 after a total of 56 matches in charge.
A man who avoided newspapers yet absorbed them, memorising and studying them while sitting at the bar counter, Bagnoli belonged to another era. He lived by old-fashioned values, ever humble and reserved, yet possessed an extraordinary intellect and vision. In 2017 he was inducted into the Italian Football Hall of Fame. Inter remained his final coaching chapter, and the club honours his memory with affection.
Today, Inter remembers Osvaldo Bagnoli with profound affection, the “Wizard of Bovisa,” one of the most iconic managers in Italian football history. He leaves behind a lasting legacy of intelligence, discipline, and a steadfast belief in the transformative power of teamwork. The Nerazzurri family salutes him as a pivotal figure who helped shape modern Italian football and who will forever be remembered for his distinctive approach, his quiet leadership, and his unwavering dedication to the game. May Osvaldo Bagnoli rest in peace.
