​We asked for your thoughts after goalkeeper Craig Gordon announced his retirement from football on Thursday. Here’s what some of you had to say:
Arthur: Celtic shouldn’t have let him go; I thought he was outstanding.
Bill: Great keeper for all his clubs and country. As a Celtic fan I felt we let him go far too soon, as his form at Hearts showed. Hopefully he won’t be lost to the game and perhaps he’ll become a great goalkeeping coach.
Chris C: He’s had such a glorious career. He’s been a superb goalkeeper for so long. To come back from a serious injury and still perform at that level is amazing. Some of his saves on European nights at Celtic were special. But my lasting memory will always be the moment in the Scottish Cup final of the treble season, on his knees in pure emotion. An incredible servant to Celtic, and a retirement that is richly deserved. Thanks for everything, Craig.
Chris: Gordon was an outstanding goalkeeper at every stage of his career — Hearts, Sunderland, Celtic, and Scotland. What he achieved after two years out of the game when he joined Celtic was remarkable. Walking into Celtic, becoming the number one keeper, and immediately delivering performances of real authority said everything about his quality and mentality. Carrying that standard into his forties is nothing short of extraordinary. A brilliant career, a model professional, and a goalkeeper whose shot-stopping skills were sensational.
Paul: Best modern-era goalkeeper Scotland has had. An utterly fantastic spell at Celtic as well. I wish him well.
Conor: It’s pretty sad that he’s retiring at such a young age; hard to believe he’s stepping away, but he’s been someone who’s felt like my whole life and has consistently been among the best Scottish keepers. I’d have picked him ahead of Gunn at the World Cup. He could still play for most clubs in the country. He should be proud of all he has achieved. Wishing him a long and happy retirement. Legend.
Thom: Gordon, you’re a legend. The best ever Scottish goalkeeper, without a doubt. Articulate and well spoken. It’s been a privilege to watch your career blossom over the years. Enjoy your retirement, big fella—you deserve it.
