​The Houston Rockets just hired Chip Engelland from the Oklahoma City Thunder as the new assistant coach under Ime Udoka. Engelland is renowned for his player development, primarily in shooting efficiency.The most logical way to gauge the impact  he will have in Houston is to look at his coaching history. Engelland has had a successful career in the NBA. He was part of the San Antonio Spurs coaching staff for 17 years, from 2005-2022, where he developed stars and won multiple NBA Championships.A great example of a player he helped develop is Kawhi Leonard. Leonard was a defensive specialist and did not have great shooting numbers in his collegiate career. However, working with Engelland, he was able to become an efficient shooter, transforming him from an elite defender to an elite two-way MVP and NBA Champion. Obviously, Engelland is not the sole reason for Leonard’s progress, but he played a crucial role in it.A more recent example to look at is Engelland’s work with Lu Dort in Oklahoma City. After coaching the Spurs, Engelland was hired by the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2022, and has been a part of their coaching staff until this week, when he was hired by Houston. Lu Dort was a defensive-oriented player before working with Engelland as well, and he is now a “D and Three” player, with impressive three-point shooting.Engelland helped Dort’s shooting motion and technique become more fluid and consistent, while also taking smarter shots. Dort saw a huge jump in his three-point shooting percentage, going from 33.2% to an outstanding 41.2%These examples are two of many, and the impact he has had throughout his long and successful career has earned him the nickname the Shot Doctor. Coming to Houston, he is expected to improve the whole team, but will likely focus on a few select players. A priority is likely to be Alperen Şengün’s free-throw and three-point shooting. Şengün averages 30.5% from three-point, and 69.1% from the free-throw line. Both of these numbers need improvement, and between Şengün’s skill and Engelland’s successful career, there is little doubt that Şengün’s numbers will improve.Engelland will also focus on Houston’s untouchable: Amen Thompson. Because Houston has invested a lot in the rising star, it is likely that improving Thompson’s shooting will be a priority for Engelland. His three-point shooting will be the main attribute to improve, as he shot a poor 21.6% from three last season. Thompson’s potential is sky high, but he will need to improve his shooting in order to become a true elite player.If Engelland can work his magic on Houston’s promising roster, what is stopping the team from being a true contender in the NBA?
