​For many teams, the offensive coordinator is the play-caller, but that’s not true for the Jacksonville Jaguars.Head coach Liam Coen called the plays last year and did his job quite well: only five teams scored more points than Jacksonville.There’s no reason to think that Coen won’t be calling the plays come Week 1, but in the preseason, somebody else will have the role.That would be offensive coordinator Grant Udinski, a 30-year-old wunderkind who has already received head coaching interest across the league. Over the offseason, Udinski interviewed with the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns for their HC vacancies, but ultimately signed a new deal that included a pay raise. Now, Coen confirmed to Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union that Udinski will be calling most of the plays throughout the preseason, building off of last year’s preseason finale, where he also called the shots.Coen cited one of his mentors as a reason for giving Udinski the opportunity.“Sean provided me that experience in (Los Angeles),” Coen said, “and I want to do the same for Grant.”“Sean” is Sean McVay, who is entering his 11th season as head coach of the Los Angeles Rams.Coen worked on McVay’s staff for four total seasons across two stints. In the second stint, which took place in the 2022 season, Coen, at 36, was the offensive coordinator, but McVay was the main play-caller.But as Coen alluded to, McVay gave him opportunities to call, and Coen took advantage, becoming a top-flight play-caller within two years and an NFL head coach within three. Udinski has been coaching since he was 23, starting as a graduate assistant for Matt Rhule at Baylor in 2019. When Rhule went to the NFL in 2020, Udinski followed him, spending the next two seasons as a coaching assistant for the Carolina Panthers. From there, he went to the Minnesota Vikings, where he spent the next three seasons on Kevin O’Connell’s staff. By the time he left Minnesota, Udinski was the team’s assistant offensive coordinator and assistant quarterbacks coach, helping the Vikings become a top 10 offense and helping QB Sam Darnold to what was then the best year of his career.He did the same for Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence last season, and although he wasn’t calling the plays, Coen has given Udinski credit for helping make the Jags offense explosive.It will have to remain explosive for the Jags to repeat as AFC South champs, where the Houston Texans are currently favored. Jacksonville went 13-4 last season, and Houston 12-5.
