Michigan does get one major advantage: eight of its 12 games will be played inside Michigan Stadium.With Bryce Underwood entering his second season and several young players expected to take bigger roles, Michigan’s schedule gives the Wolverines opportunities to make a statement — but there aren’t many weeks they can afford to overlook.September Gives Michigan a Huge Home-Field AdvantageMichigan won’t leave Ann Arbor for the entire month of September.The season begins Sept. 5 against Western Michigan under the lights at 7:30 p.m. on NBC. It’s a matchup Michigan should be expected to control, but it also gives Whittingham his first real opportunity to show what his version of Michigan football will look like.Things get much more interesting one week later.Oklahoma comes to the Big House on Sept. 12 for a noon kickoff on FOX. Michigan traveled to Norman last season, and now the Sooners make the return trip to Ann Arbor. Michigan has designated the game as a Maize Out, adding even more attention to what should be one of the biggest non-conference games of the season.Michigan then hosts UTEP on Sept. 19 before opening Big Ten play against Iowa on Sept. 26.Four straight home games give Michigan an opportunity to settle into its new system before the schedule becomes much more difficult.Big Ten Play Starts to Heat UpMichigan’s first road trip doesn’t come until Oct. 3 at Minnesota, where the Wolverines will battle for the Little Brown Jug.After that, Michigan gets an early bye week on Oct. 10.The timing could be extremely valuable because what follows might be one of the most important two-game stretches of Michigan’s season.Penn State visits Ann Arbor on Oct. 17 for Homecoming, followed by Indiana on Oct. 24. Both opponents entered the preseason ranked in the AP Top 10, with Indiana coming off a national championship season.If Michigan wants to put itself in position to compete for a Big Ten Championship and College Football Playoff spot, those are the types of games it will need to win.The Wolverines close October with their second road game of the season, traveling to Rutgers on Oct. 31.Michigan State Comes to the Big HouseThere is never much explanation needed when Michigan and Michigan State meet.The Spartans travel to Ann Arbor on Nov. 7, giving Michigan another rivalry game at home.Regardless of where either program sits entering November, this is always one of the games circled on the schedule.For Michigan, it’ll also begin a difficult final month where three of its last four games could have major postseason implications.The Trip to Oregon Could Change EverythingMichigan’s toughest road test may come Nov. 14
